The comments in that thread about insurance are just ridiculous.

1) It totally depends on the insurance policies of the various parties involved.
2) Most insurance companies do consider autoX to be in the same catagory as racing.
3) Many (but not yet all) insurance companies that used to cover track-type events have recently changed their policies to specifically exclude ANYTHING that happens on a "racing surface".
4) If they signed a liability waiver to be there, each of the three victim cars may be SOL for getting any coverage for the incident. However, it depends a lot on the waiver and the state law.
5) The right thing to do would be for the driver of the P-car to "man up" and pay for everything, but for most people this would be literally an "erase your life savings" type of event if you even could cover it at all.

Enough with calling for the course designer's head already; if this account is remotely accurate, this incident was entirely attributable to driver error, not course design.

A quote from the VW Vortex thread which seems appropriate here, and at any other event where things happen due to reasons other than mechanical failure:

This incident had little to do with autocrossing, and more to do with the driver running out of talent before he ran out of stupid.
