I literally just got my ap2 back for the second time from the shop for the 2nd gear pop. Was a defect with it. My local dealership had a transmission shop do the work for them and they replaced 2nd 3rd and 4th gear. 2nd gear they replaced ended up having a problem and one of the teeth broke off on installation and caused a horrible rattle. So 16 days in the shop the first time and about 1 1/2 weeks the second time. Everything running/shifting great now. Had to fight with dealership though. Their tech line that they have to call for approval for the warranty work tried to say it was the clutch and I was a bad driver. This is only covered under the 3 year drive train warranty though.

Good luck. Hope you have a better experience and a better local dealership.

While I don't know near as much about the s2000 as many folks on this forum, this was the same problem I had on the E36 M3 and there was a tranny mount bushings kit that solved the problem.

Popping out of gear is a PROBLEM. FLuid is not the issue.

You likely have some worn teeth. As far as being able to pull out of gears without clutch, yes at the right RPM you are able to change gears without clutch, I would not make a habit of it though.

^^^ I'm really hoping that's not what it is and that I was just being a terrible driver (that's easier and cheaper to fix) and botching up the shift.

I'll change out my fluids and find out for sure at the next auto-x and track days next month. I'm placing the probability on terrible driving at 75% since it never popped out of 2nd gear at the auto-x the day before (the only gear i was using after shifting out of first, no shifting needed), and it doesn't ever pop out during street driving.

I had problems poping out of upper gears 4-5 at the track, I replaced the tranny in my '00 with an AP2 tranny, I pumped the oil and it had air in it. When I went back and checked it the level was low due to the air in the fluid during pumping. Putting more fluid in fixed the problem for me.

Was your level low?

PS- according to Puddy Mod Racing- who rebuilt my rear diff, you should run Amsoil if you are going to track the car for the best protection.

Your results may vary.

I just replaced all the fluids in my transmission and my diff. I used Honda MTF for my trans and the Redline Lightweight Shockproof Gear oil for the diff.

Everything felt pretty nice just street driving it today so far. The "shake down" as to what i'm experiencing will be next month Sept 18 and 24 (auto-x and a track day). I'll know soon enough if it was fluid and a combo of sloppy driving or something else more troublesome.
