Default Pyrometer use......

I spent last Saturday at the SeDiv in Shelbyville, TN watching the event. Really enjoyed it and had a chance to meet and talk with Ken Rupp E-stock National champ last season. He and Robert Carpenter from my home region had quite a battle going. I noticed between rus he used a pyrometer to check temps across the width of the tire. I'd like to know what to be looking for when using one and who makes a durable one for hauling around in my tool box!

This is what I extracted from pgs. 32-34 of Ross Bentley's "Speed Secrets."

Reading Tires

Camber

Temperature even at inside & outside of tread-optimum camber angle
Temperature inside higher-too much negative camber
Temperature outside higher-too much positive camber

Pressure

Temp. in middle of tread equal to average of inside & outside, tire pressure is correct
Too hot in middle, tire pressure too high
Too cool in the middle, tire pressure too low

Car balance

Front & rears even, good balance
Fronts hotter than rears, fronts sliding more than rears
Rears hotter than fronts, rears sliding more than front

Performance

If temp too low, not driving car hard enough
If temp too high, driving too hard (sliding)

Tire Surface

Should be very dull black all across the tread
Shiny areas are being overloaded
Very slight wavy grained texture if being driven hard enough

All subject to my misinterpretation as a novice, of course. I thought the book was well worth reading.

I made up a little form in Word that I can fill out as I check the temperatures--ask and I'll e-mail you one as an attachment.

I bought an infra-red pyrometer manufactured by Longacre at Dave Turner Autosports for $99. Easy to use.

Clarification/Amplification:

The pyrometer is a Raytek MiniTemp Mini Laser Sight IR Pyrometer DISTRIBUTED by Longacre. Their catalog price is $99.

I haven't used one but isn't there a problem with using an IR pyrometer and getting accurate readings due to fast surface cooling right after a run?

Pen-

I'm not sure about that. Ken took 3 readings - inside shoulder center and outside shoulder. He did this immediately after each run. I would assume if done right after the run the temps would be fairly accurate. It's my understanding that your looking more for temp variations side to side and not so much at the actual temp itself.
