Hi folks, I’m fairly new to aerodynamics and hoping a few people can help me out here. I bought my car about 3 years ago with a Js Racing wing (equivalent to the Voltex Type 5) and it came with 350mm CG stands.
Currently it sits above the roof line and I’m now wondering if this is even providing any downforce at this point or is it just adding drag?
I finally worked out the last few issues with the car and track season has come to an end, so would love to hear some thoughts about this.
You actually get more downforce the higher it sits (up to a certain point at least).
A wing that is too low doesn't get enough airflow because part of the car is in front of it.
By moving the wing higher up you put it in more clean air it can do its magic on.
That's a 3D wing right? Those are made to be ran below the roofline as the angle of the air coming off the roof is different. If you are going to be running a wing above the roofline you are better off with a 2D wing.
A common reason why wings are ran below/at the roof line is because multiple organizations have rules to limit wing placement to the roofline. This prevents people from placing wings 3 feet above the car or even on the roof of the car. It looks hideous and obstructs the view of other racers.
One of the only places were you'll still see cars without limitations on the wings is the series of Lemons which is more about having fun than seriousness.
In my uneducated opinion, even with the 3D design of the wing, I'd say it's still generating downforce.
