Default Racecar driver athletes

Thought this might be of interest - the physical demands of racing can be significant!

Physiological responses to high-speed, open-wheel racecar driving

PATRICK L. JACOBS; STEPHEN E. OLVEY; BRAD M. JOHNSON; KELLY A. COHN
ABSTRACT
JACOBS, P. L., S. E. OLVEY, B. M. JOHNSON, and K. A. COHN. Physiological
responses to high-speed, open-wheel racecar driving. Med. Sci. Sports
Exerc., Vol. 34, No. 12, pp. 2085-2090, 2002. High-speed auto racing has
been demonstrated to produce accelerated heart rate (HR) during competition.
However, it has not been determined whether the increase in HR was due to
physical work efforts or a result of emotional stress.

Purpose:
The purpose of this investigation was to examine the physiological responses
associated with open-wheel automobile driving at competitive speeds.

Methods:
Oxygen consumption and HR were assessed in seven professional automobile
racing drivers during two incrementally paced driving sessions. A portable
metabolic analyzer and EKG were directly attached to the subjects as they
participated in driving tests on an oval speedway and a roadway course.
Maximal physiological responses of the subjects were also determined during
a graded treadmill test.

Results:
During treadmill testing, maximal oxygen consumption (O2max) ranged from of
42.0 to 59.7 mL

never doubted it. a study done long ago stated that typical cart drivers have a heart rate of >200bpm (mario andretti had a particularly low bpm compared to others) for the 2 hours they race. That rate at that length would kill most americans with a heart attack.

It should also be a wake up call to all the track junkies out there. Get in shape!!

After I began a comprehensive workout program last year to get back to my "fighting weight" :-) I noticed my on track performance was more consistent, breathing exertion was reduced, etc. We may not be doing competitive stuff, but 20 minutes on track in 100F ambients with a helmet on pushing a car to the limits is a physically taxing exercise.

but its also true that fat guys like me can go fast, but i now nearly pass out after a full court hoops pickup game to 11(by ones).....that's one of the reasons cars are great.

Also, car racing is the truly unisex sport, little bitty girls can and do go as fast as men, but would be trounced in other traditional sporting activities....even by fat guys like me.

Bitterwoman, when are we playing one-on-one??

Old thread but thought I would bump it to the top. I was Go-Karting the other day and happen to strap my heart rate monitor on to see how things were going inside.

I was suprised when I saw a max of 194 BPM with an Avg of 156.

Haven't had a heart attack yet and do not want one.

I really need to get in better shape for this stuff.
