Default Rear wing

Been browsing a lot to search for more data for more rear downforce and have been looking at rear wing and diffuser lately.

what works and what doesnt? and do you guys mount it on the stock trunk( read that it flexes too much with the increased downforce on it).

whats your opinion and what are you using? pictures will be great

a diffuser will do little or nothing unless you have a full, smooth undertray. simply tacking a diffuser on the back won't be effective due to the nasty, turbulent air flow created by the messy underside of the car.

For a wing, if it is small-medium (span of 60" and chord of less than 8" or so), then you should be able to just mount it to the trunk. A wing like mine (span of ~70" and max chord of ~15"), you could mount to the trunk, and then brace the trunk from underneath... or make it much more simple and just cut through the trunk and run the mounts down to the chassis.

Also, if you upgrade to a carbon fibre trunk, it will be able to take a lot more force... so you could run a bigger wing and still get away with just bolting it to the trunk.

now, if you add a wing to the back, you should really add some front downforce. If you don't, you'll end up with a huge aero push. Your car will be annoyingly slow through all the fast corners, and your front tires will have a very short life. Even a small wing on the rear will usually cause an aero push with some of the better aftermarket noses. You'll likely want to add your own splitter to whatever nose you get.

Total random noob question:

Are the canards sold by C-west and the like functional, or just bling?

Everyone else has a wing, it must work, right?

I ended up buying an extra trunk and a cheap wing from another guy on here...
I used it at the track and didnt really feel much difference, then I increased the angle of attack and the car felt much more planted.

I can support my body weight on mine... I bolted it as far rear on the trunk as possible (the trunk is stronger there) and bolted some metal plates for extra support

I suppose some of the more expensive wings do a better job (and look cooler) but im happy with this one. I dont care about this extra trunk so it got dented up a little in the mounting process.

plus your car looks more like a racecar.

fun science tidbit of the day:

pressure acting on a surface exerts a force perpendicular to that surface.

therefore, tiny surface area = tiny force. The c-west ones look pretty small, so they would be good for very subtle tuning. A splitter on the other hand has a much larger surface area, and therefore can provide significantly more downforce.

3312DC:

your wing looks like it has too steep of an angle of attack. the profile of the wing matters a lot... but even cheap wings can be made a lot better if you do a few things to help it (add a Gurney Lip, deeper endplates...).

read this for more info... lots of good pics and drawings here.

im currently using the J's Racing carbon wing on my S2k. Its a nice piece, cause ti mounts at the pinch welds at the far edges of the trunk, so it shouldnt flex much at all. They also make a center mount versions, and now sell contoured reinforcement plates to bolt to the bottom side of the trunk lid if you choose that route.

The canard's function is not to give downforce. Have a look on google and see what it does. It has a totally different function.

And yes, it does work. Will one feel it on the s2000? Probably not imo.
