Default Redline TimeAttack at Cal Speedway

Its been almost a year since Stinkytofu and I took 1st place in both Mod and Street class at the Redline TimeAttack.com event in California Speedway.

We returned again this year along with other familiar faces like HunterEZ in the Mod Class and Nimbus in the Street Class to reclaim our win again.

In the Modified RWD class, HunterEZ and I were out gunned by high HP cars (400hp+? & 10 sec. 1/4 time?). I ran a fairly clean lap on my last session but still was about 2 seconds slower then the podium finishing cars like the Turbo NSX and Turbo 300/350Zs. Both HunterEZ and I were not able to get a podium finish in our class. Looks like our S2000 will need a built FI engine to be competitive in the Modified Class from now on.

In the Street RWD class, both Nimbus and Stinkytofu were very competitive against other cars in their class. Unfortunately, a mechanical trouble brought Stinkytofu's car down to a halt during the practice session before the final time attack. However, Nimbus was able to claim a podium finish for the 3rd place!

I also drove an Evo 8 RS for Evasive Motorsports (S2ki.com Forums Sponsor). The Evo was still on its shake down stage but took 3rd place in its class. Not bad for a newly completed car with only 3 track days on its belt. Evasive Evo Video

It was nice to be in a high HP for a change after driving a underpowered S2000 all the time.

Overall, the event went very well considering the rain storm in the morning. The morning sessions felt like we were driving on a lake!

One thing that I disliked about the track layout was its use of cones and temporary curbs that kept shifting after each lap. The temporary curbs were especially annoying and dangerous as it shifted into the race line as everyone ran over them.

However, I feel that Redline is the best group in terms getting media to be involved in the event and running a smooth event.

Well, enough talking. Here are some pictures from the event. There were some bas ass cars out there on the track. (Photo: Yen)

Go HunterEZ go!

On a side note: The long awaited 255/40/17 size in Nitto NT01 is out. This is prob. the optimal tire size for non-staggered S2000 in 17"inch wheel size as it fits perfectly behind the stock fenders given the right wheel offset.

I been using their 245/45/17 tire size for both my AP2 and AJ-Rs AP1 for the Time Attacks for the past year but always felt that the sidewall was bit taller then I wanted it to be. The 255/40/17 is out now so I highly recommend trying them as they are far superior to the Toyo RA1s in terms of both ultimate grip and slide characteristics.

This was my first track day with the new 255 and the car feel much more responsive to my inputs. My initial review is positive so i will keep you guys updated to see if 255 drops my lap times this year.

Excellent write-up and pics Rob!

S2000's were really out-gunned in Modified class by higher HP turbo cars, street class was also the same scenerio. 1st place 350Z from VRT featured on the front page of their own website says their twin turbo 350Z puts out 554 whp & 690 lb/ft torque. I feel much better losing by only 8 tenths after reading that.
