I will wait to hear from the participants, but my initial reaction is one of disappointment. Not only were the S2000s several seconds slower than the fastest SS Boxster S, but they were also 2 seconds behind the fastest BS cars and even behind the CS leader.

Hope we can chalk it up to working on the setup and driver familiarity. But I was expecting more with the Comptech swaybar - I'm watching its peformance closely because I need a front bar.

Maybe the conditions turned for the worst? Maybe the other drivers are just really god? Hope to hear from Jason et al soon.

Looks to me like it's just a matter of them becoming more familiar with the new car and setup.

Jason had a 35.514 on one of his runs. I think that beats all BS and was on pace with the SS winner. I think they did pretty well considering it was a new car and a new setup. Also three Red Lights for Jason didin't help his sitaution any.

I'm keeping the faith!

Good point, I missed the 35.5. Hopefully that is more indicative of what the car will do once everyone is familiar with the car.

Don't want to seem like I'm putting too much pressure on those intrepid souls who are putting the time and effort into trying to be competitive on a national level, but you guys are the center of attention now :-)

Well, we're back... all night driving to Mobile to park the car, and a flight to Chicago at 6:00 and we are all wasted. But on the plus side next weekend we'll be only 2.5 hours from the event site.

Sunday report:

They don't have the sunday times up yet. Pretty much everyone was able to improve on Sunday. Rob Faulkner and Danny Shields were able to turn 35.2's on both sides, and Mark Sipe improved as well. I lined up for my left course run first (remember, I need a clean one!) and clipped off a 35.2xx but with 3 pylons. That meant I needed to score a good run on my LAST left course run which would be on my final run of the day. If you start on the left at a Pro, you finish on the left for that session. I swung around to the right and red-lighted. Went back to grid to ponder the impossiblity of my situation. Lined up for the next right course run and... you guessed it - Red lighted! DOH! Swung around to the left and waited for GREEN to even think about going. A red-light would have ended it all. I stayed off the cones, and drove conservatively. At the finish, I was headed too close for comfort for a cone, and I dialed in more steering. There was still one more manuever in the course, and that steering jog meant I needed to steer more for the final one. The car snap-spun across the finish line. I crossed the lights sideways and did 1 and a half revolutions before coming to a stop in front of a cheering crowd. The result? Clean 35.7xx. Not a great time, but enough to jump me up to 4th in SS, and 1st in AS. My final time was .901 behind Faulkner (.45 per side), and my best raw times (just barely tipped cones) was only .150 behind him! With the shocks, it would have been a different story. Once we get them, we should be able to run with SS on courses like this (heck, we already can!) This course was very narrow and had nothing but transitions. UL, That's why BS/CS were almost as fast as AS... Narrow, light cars fared well on these courses.

Brad and Juliann both improved their times (Brad=35.9xx and Juliann=37.2xx) but had pylons so they didn't improve in the standings. Brad ended up 8th in SS, and 2nd in AS. Randy improved as well on his final runs and took 4th place in AS - one bonus of not having many competitors was that we all came away with good A-Stock ProSolo points to start the season with.

As a comparison, GH Sharp was able to run 35.191 on one side, but much slower on the other. Bragging rights still go to him, as he turned a 71.212 overall to my 71.295. But like I said... we don't have shocks yet, and we'll only get better with seat time.

As Howard Duncan (SCCA Solo manager) said in the trophy presentation - "keep your eye on this yellow S2000 as the season goes on."

It's going to be a great season! Meridian, here we come!

Good going Jason, et al! Tough with those red lightings to put the pressure on, I'd say. The season is just starting! Go get 'em at Meridian!

Good job Jason.

BTW, did you have any clutch problems? Did you continue to launch at the 5000 rpm you were talking about in the practice?

I'm anxious to start the big season on our side of the world. Only 4 weeks to go until we are in the warmth of sunny San Diego for the National Tour.

Oh, one more thing.....

I don't normally say anything negative, but "Ultimate Lurker," S2000's were run all year in the 2000 series and did well. Although Jason will be great competition for us, he isn't really breaking new ground. True there are more things available for the cars this year such as a swaybar, but I spent all of last year trying to get the car working right. Gary Thomason won AS at Nationals in an S2000 with one of the primary differences between his car and the one I drove being a swaybar.
