Default Road Race & S2000

Took my car to the track yesterday. It was a lot of fun. S2000 is quite the car for the money, although it left me wishing for more power and better brakes (my other car is a Supra Turbo).

I have noticed that under certain conditions the car would burn some oil - a puff of smoke from exhaust. Is this a common occurence? Is this a problem? Is there a fix? Both mine and my friend's MY '02 had this occur under heavy cornering (turning right) in 2nd gear at about 7,500-8,000 RPM.

Also what is the recommended maintenance after a track day. I was going to change rear diff fluid, engine oil, and brake fluid. Any additional maintenance? What kind of differential fluid is recommended? Redline Synthetic? Honda OEM?

Thanks,
KGB

You really don't have to do much.

The smoke comes from the oil breather tube that's fed into the intake.

I use redline fluids and they work fine.

Brake fluid and better pads are recommended for track duty (and should address your comcerns of the OEM brake setup).

Slick Rick - thanks for the answer about oil. I figured it wasn't a problem, but I'm glad to confirm this for the peace of mind.

Pellis - I ran ATE blue & Carbontech P+. It's a good combo - the brakes held up good fade-wise. Don't get me wrong, OEM brakes are OK - they just not Super.

1. To improve brake cooling, remove dust shields. Braided lines will help with pedal feel as well. Ate fluid and P+ pads are my favorite combo.

2. Smoke puffs, particularly on hard right handers, is normal in many cars. I'm one of the lucky few that doesn't smoke on track corners.

3. Redline 75W/90 or Mobil 1 75W/90 synthetics is a good choice for the rear diff.

pfb - good idea about brake cooling ducts, also I think SS lines is my next thing for the brakes.

rich 4 S2000 - there is always room for better. Trust me if you ever take S2k to the track that's hard on brakes you'll want better.

In what way were the brakes lacking?

You said you didn't have fade problems, so that leaves modulation/control/feel, or absolute stopping power, or something else?

Unless your getting Fade the only way to brake better is to have more GRIP. So you need better tires. Alot of people think that Better pads or larger rotors will actually shorten their stomping distance. If you can activate the ABS all the way down then your limiting factor is your TIRES.
