S2000 Challenge #6&7:Spring Mountain / Pahrump Time Trials and Track day: May 25-26th

Our next event is the weekend of May 25 & 26thth, 2002
Price: $120 one day/$220 2 day (+$20 per day instructor fee required for novices)

Duration: 2 day / 5 hours of track time per group!*

Track: Spring Mountain (near Pahrump, NV, 60 miles north of Vegas)

Registration: Registration is open

Event Info:

Spring Mountain is the very popular track out of which the Bragg-Smith driving school operates. Like the Streets of Willow Springs, it is a great layout for car and driver development, making it ideal for novices. As can be seen from the map below, SM offers both the opportunity for speed on the long straight as well as a good combination of high-speed sweepers and technical sections. We will be running the full course in the clockwise direction. At only a few years old, the track is one of the newest in the west, and has just recently been re-sealed for maximum grip.

Event headquarters for this event is the Pahrump Best Western, which has graciously offered reduced room rates for people attending this event. Just mention Wurth Motorsports when you register to take advantage of this offer.

see http://www.speedventures.net/5-25_event.asp for more info / online registration

what do you consider a "novice"?? Also, how are the run groups classed? By skill or just randomly?

A novice, for the purposes of requiring an instructor, is someone unfamiliar with on-track driving. If you've driven on the track before, and you're comfortable doing it alone, you don't need one.

Groups are classed according to skill level and car capabilities. For instance, a new driver in a Z06 will start in Yellow, and probably move up to White after a few sessions. A very fast driver in a Fiat 500 will probably always run in Yellow, White at the most. Just randomly classing groups would be pretty dangerous.

btw, legal prostitution w/in 15min of the track..........the "Monkey,er or Squirrel Ranch', or whatever they are called. they are actually building this huge resort hooker complex with 36 hole Championship golf course and jumbo jet airport. i was at the track a few months ago and one of the guys wife went and got the "menu" from one of the brothels.......her hair was a little ruffled, i don't know what else she got.

the track is 45 min from vegas....if u stay in vegas, try the west end of the strip to be closer.

krazik 04-24-2002 09:36 AM

Anyone know the length of the track?

It consists of seven corners, one of which is an exact duplicate of the hairpin at Mosport (corners 5A and 5B), known as Moss corner."

i think the desert turtles are out and occasionally cross the track

krazik 04-24-2002 01:27 PM

Nice! A moving slalom!

Strike 04-24-2002 01:29 PM

Actually I've heard that sometimes they have to stop everyone to remove some of the animals. Apparently they're an endangered species or something.

sfphinkterMC 04-24-2002 04:28 PM

someone repost the jackrabbit mpeg so i can get in the mood

krazik 04-24-2002 04:46 PM

Where do you think Aaron B got his stupid user name?

fluxen 04-25-2002 06:26 AM

Yep, the desert tortoises are for real. It's not like it happens every hour or anything, but you do have to stop the run should a tortoise wander out onto the track.

You DON'T want to hit one at speed, believe me.

krazik 04-25-2002 09:14 AM

Yeah, I bet the turtle would be fine too.. Screw your suspension up for sure.

How about the bitterman tortoise guard?

God knows that if anyone needs a tortoise guard, it's Aaron! :p

The desert tortoise is an endangered species, as John said, and you're not supposed to pick them up because they occasionally relieve themselves out of fear, thereby voiding precious fluids which they would otherwise be able to re-uptake via some mechanism I don't know about. You know, a desert survival mechanism of some kind.

Of course a car coming at them at 100 mph might cause them to void also. I usually pick them up to move them out of the way of traffic and have never had a problem. Lap times are on the order of 16 hours, hand timed. We'll attach the 'ol AMB if we see one.

Long Live The Desert Tortoise.

Folkers,

We've got 15 Corvettes signed up and 15 S2000's signed up. It's a competition, so let's get some more S2000's. I'm really excited to see a few new names from the S2000 world. Should be a fun event.

hey this is my first time on the track w/ my s2k...(i'm registered)...

anyone got brake pad recommendations (and where to get them fast/cheap?)? these will be used for track only.

also, can I get away w/ just a front pad replacement?

I'm a low-budget racer :)

jzr 04-30-2002 07:15 PM

For the track on street tires I'd recommend a complete set of Porterfield R4S's. Another (slightly more hardcore) option is the Carbotech Panter Plus. You can get either set quickly from Ben at Bulletproof for a great price. I also recommend a good high-temp brake fluid, ATE Superblue or similar.

See you there! :)

Prolene, Minboost:

Prolene: glad you're coming out. Don't worry about the vettes or other S2000's for that matter, there's always someone faster. Improving your times and driving skill is most important. Then when you start beating people, you talk smack.

Minboost: do not keep stock pads on the rear. I ran through a brand new set of stock rears in 2 run sessions at Laguna. They didn't even last the day. You definately want to run the R4S pads JZR recommends. I wouldn't bother with more agressive pads until you've tried the R4S pads.

I have the same problem with the R4S pads that cdelena shows. I just thought they would be good beginner pads. Then if they start crumbling go to Panther+ or R4 or something else.

dt

minboost 05-01-2002 08:55 PM

well, i'm not really a beginner. this is my first time on the track w/ my S2k but I've time trialed my MR2 on several different tracks. Ofcourse, in that car (which started out non-turbo) the suspension and power needed the most attention. With the S2000, I noticed that the brakes and tires would need the most attention (IMHO). I think I'll go P+ and stock rotors.

another quickie....motul 6 vs. super blue ATE? and where would I get superblue ATE for cheap in so cal?

I've tried only motul 6 and that ford junk in my mr2. the motul 6 performed well....is it worth it to go blue?

Just an update, guys. We've got 17 S2000's registered, and a lot of space remaining (read "very little traffic"), so if you're interested, come on out!

I'm sure this has been discussed, but I think Honda made a big mistake with the rear brakes of the S2000. They should have been vented rotors; I have no idea why they're not...

s2k_redhead 05-03-2002 08:18 AM

Maybe they wanted it to be "like" a great track car ... but not actually BE a track car (warranty exposure, etc.).

:) oh, don't get me wrong, the s2k is definitely a great track car, I just think it would have been wise to put vented rotors on the rear (the fronts are vented; don't confuse "drilled" with vented, in case you are). I'd guess it was a cost issue, but the cost differential has to be really minor...

s2k_redhead 05-03-2002 03:37 PM

I was  at Honda, not you. :D Based on my teeny experience, it's a kick a$$ track car!

fluxen 05-06-2002 07:37 AM

No question! :)
