Default SCCA Membership

I've been reading about SCCA and have been checking out their website. It all seems great and I would love to start getting involved in some HPDEs, solos, road rallys, and whatever else comes down the line.

My biggest concern is first my age. I am 18 (legal in NJ, I don't know if it varies state to state) There is a first gear membership that says ages 21 and below and you can't do timed events and some other things. When it says 21 and under does that mean for anyone 21 and under you MUST be that or can I just get a regular membership?

My next concern is the modifications to my car. Is anything listed in my sig going to make it so I cannot drive in the events?

A question that I have is saftey. Is a rollbar needed for all events or only for real race tracks? Could a hardtop take the roll of a rollbar?

Also my dad might be interested in some events (certainly not tracks) but the road rallys and maybe autoX yes. Could I enter him under my membership ID?

Thanks for the help! This club seems RIGHT up my alley as far as my interests go! I can't wait to start getting into some of this stuff!

I don't know about age limitations, but I would think there is not because there are 16 year olds racing in major racing events like 24 hours of Daytona. I could be wrong.

As for car, for road course racing (not auto-x), my understanding is that your car must meet their full regs for a given class, and that means full cage and more (so not street legal).

As far as AutoX goes, the SCCA has a class for every car no matter the mod. Whether or not it will be competitive in that class is another story. As for age, 18 is legal for AutoX and probably everything else they offer.

I just finished my first race weekend at Sears Point. I am 18. I believe you can road race with the SCCA as early as 16.

SCCA membership is worth it just for the magazine.

Explain why I think the magazine is worth the price of membership? Not really

It's a good magazine and when you get it you'll see why I think so.

You can enjoy HPDEs w/o having to succumb to SCCA regulations and/or rule-book-nazis. Find a track near you, look at the calender on their website and pick a group to run with that's rented the track for the day.

You been hanging around with Dennis Hale or something?

SCCA membership -- the first gear membership certainly covers autocross. SCCA autocrosses don't always require membership, but those that don't often offer a discounted entry fee for members. Your membership wouldn't cover your dad as far as entry requirements, but there is also a family membership deal that you could check out.

The magazine isn't so hot in my opinion. Occasionally there's something interesting in there for me to read, but usually it gets set aside unopened. I'm not a real magazine reader though.

I'm mainly a member because membership is required for the autocross events within the Bay Area, and for National Tour & ProSolo events.
