Default SCCA AS Noob Question.

Currently in BSP thinking about switching to AS. I know they are not actually aero functional and just add weight, but under the old "Anything not specifically permitted is forbidden" adage it looks as though an OEM front lip, trunk spoiler, or side strakes (although dealer installed) put you out of AS correct? Would the 1/2 inch holes left in the side panels by removing the side strakes be considered illegal lightening?
Maybe I'll just stay in BSP where such doodads and geegaws are allowed.

Thanks for the help!

Its all OEM, so you should be able to stay in A stock, We have A stock cars that run with the oem front lip in SFR region.

This is not correct. The OEM items that are installed by the dealer(front lip rear spolier, sidestrakes) are NOT AS legal.

On the other hand , you will only be protested if you trophy. Most people would consider that a wheeny protest. I trophied for the season (WDR SCCA region) and did not get a protest over my front OEM lip but someone could have protested if they wanted to.

Do not even think of running Nationals or a Prosolo with thst stuff on your car. Although again it will only be an issue if you trophy.

Technically, these parts are illegal but I don't think you'll find anybody who would protest at any level. If they do, they should face ridicule and alienation from their peers.

I also have all the OEM dealer installed non-functional aero stuff on my car. At the local and even divisional level, nobody cared. (Side note: I recently added the Mugen SS Wing, and the local guys say they still don't care.)

Last September I attended my 1st Nationals. To be safe, I went ahead and took off the aero stuff, which took a whole 5 minutes, and plugged the holes in the trunk with plastic plugs from a local parts place and had no problem... (I actually forgot about the holes from the side strakes... oops.) If they were concerned about the intent of weight loss, I have plenty of other goodies that far outweigh the savings from the holes.... I would doubt that protest would hold up due to the weenie factor.

One thing to keep in mind... I am not a Nationals platform contender, but I did do better than expected by being only one position from getting a trophy.

With all that being said, don't let just those parts bump you to BSP. Just be up front with the folks and ask... Unless you have protest weenies in your area, you'll be good to go.

Unfortunately, there have been some impressive weenie protests upheld in the past between s2k owners.

But Mike...locally...and even probably at Divisionals, you shouldn't have a problem.

Drat! I would hope that S2000 owners would work together to hold our ground against the C4 and those darn Kappas. Of course, at that level, the chances of weenies increases.

BTW, what kind of weenie protest that got upheld?

Thanks for the replies everybody. I'm certainly not good enough yet to be beating any of the AS S2K guys in my region. BSP is a bit more of a free for all, and I may have a chance to trophy every once in a while there. I'm just out there to have fun and get seat time this year. I'll think seriously next year about making my car a bit more of an AS contender if I improve enough this year. (I'm staying on street rubber this year, just trying to work on smoothness mostly)

Nobody in our area is going to give you crap about the OEM aero parts...CFR has some pretty laid back people running it...I've never seen one weenie protest yet in over 2 years running with them. Hell, I could have weenie protested Ian Stewart's Cooper running in SM2 (pulley change) since it belongs in SM technically, but I didn't. It's 3 measly points, and it's not even his car.

You can't protest an SM car for running in SM2. They're explicitly allowed in SM2, and at lower weight minimums, to boot!

As for the original question, I do not believe that the lip spoilers and side strakes would be protested even at a national level. In fact, it seems more likely to occur at the local level, just due to the greater number of "personalities" (which I guess is a nice way of saying small-pond whackos with no sense of perspective).

The closest thing to what might be called a "weenie protest" I've heard of in the S2000 was Ian showing up to Nationals with a missing fan shroud after receiving a warning about it at an earlier event. I wasn't involved so I'm fuzzy on the details, but I wouldn't consider it to be "weenie" if fair warning was given.
