It's basically a really fast autocross. They only use the smallest and most technical parts of the track. The sections with long straights (by autocross standards) are made into chicanes to keep speeds lower, though speeds are still higher than you'll see in any parking lot. Off track excursions are strongly advised against - a 4 wheel off results in immediate DNFs to all three of your runs.
It's a two-day event and Buttonwillow is a ways away from LA proper. Most participants rent a room nearby for Saturday night, when there's a big barbeque and social gathering put on by the Cal Club.

Cool. I've got a red S2000, the one with the rubber chicken hanging out the back. If you would like a little instuction, in addition to myself, I know a couple "decent" Miata drivers that might be willing to help...
Man, that may have been the two most fun days of autocrossing ever!
Something like, , x6, sleep, some more, eat, drive home. In the middle of the there's some foggy memory of drunken karaoke...maybe it was just a bad dream?
Okay, I've been post whoring the crap out of this thread, and here's another one...
I've brought my work's Canon XL1 to a few different events but I always manage to screw one thing or another up with the filming and never get any decent footage. This time I did a little better.
From Sunday:
Video of 3 runs (31MB)
First run: (58.6)
Run 2, my best clean run, got accidentally taped over.. (57.4)
Third run: A DNF complete with foul language and really messy driving. (57.7)
Fourth run - Started off with a missed shift, got behind in the slalom and was a bit sloppy in a couple places, but otherwise I was happy with it. Minus the cone I would've placed 4th instead of 5th, but oh well. 35 megs.. (57.1)
It's funny, in watching the footage a few times I can totally see where I was going too slow, or too fast, or was way off line, whatever. There was at least another second or two out there. I've found analyzing the runs to be a good learning experience. As an alternative to filming, I think I'm going to look into one of the Geez! systems for next year.
