Sump baffle or Dry Sump?

Default Sump baffle or Dry Sump?

From peoples experience - are either baffling of the standard sump (as Spoon offer) or dry sumping nescessary for fast road or track use? as the cornering (G) forces from using slicks on a race track will be a lot greater than 'normal' road forces

Has anybody experience of loosing oil pressure or blowing engines due to loosing the oil flow into the pump?

Has anyone lost VTEC in a corner. VTEC needs a certain oil pressure to keep the pins engaged so it is a good indication of if you losing oil pressure. FYI my Prelude has a lot of issues in this area

The stock engine has a full baffle and as far as I can tell has NO issues with oil starvation. There are no reports of pressure drops or VTEC problems. The only track oil issue I have seen is the little bit of smoke occasionally with a rare high gee turn and it appears to be nothing more than a little oil crawl to the PVC.

I never had oil pressure and/or VTEC problems with my '97 SH. I simply beta-tested the ATTS for 4 years since *it* would cut out in the middle of a corner (autox). I could handle the loss of ATTS but the 2 second power loss to "help" you bring the car back into control was a killer. I got to the point of not restting the ATTS unless I thought I really needed it (slippery track, etc.) but it would reset itself 50% of the time by just turning the car off and back on...

Still, no oil problems...

I guess I am lucky but I have not had any problems with my ATTS and I have been tracking and autocrossing my Type SH for 4 years. On high G left hand corners I sometimes have problems with VTEC cutting out which has been traced back to oil starvation at the pickup. The problem is that the oil pickup is on the left hand side of the oil pan and when turning left sometimes enough oil sloshes to the right of the pan to uncover the oil pickup. Since the oil pan on the S2000 is running lengthwise I would care to guess it would not have this kind of problem. But then again I figure there must be some concern since Mugen and Spoon has made a baffled S2000 oil pan.

hint: use smaller oil filters and wrap them with those aluminum screw-tighten bands (for like pipes and stuff) avail. at hardware stores


as for the oil pan baffle vs. dry sump...

well, you better go with a baffled oil pan because a dry sump will cost you a crap load to convert to. im sure nobody has designed a system yet, and are not planning to

baffled oil pan is just like a regular oil pan with baffles inside (hence the name) which prevent sloshing of oil during high g-loads
a dry sump oil system is where the oil is "stored" in a remote location and is scavenged via pumps to get to the engine; this allows for an engine to be mounted lower in the engine bay, thus lowering the car's CG. (the oil pan is still there, but the clearance is only for the crankshaft; there's no "drop-butt" thing like in normal oil pans; it's flat and shorter.) this is found only in hardcore racecars or serious streetcar-to-racecar conversions (like the late great BTCC). this means dry sumping a wet sump engine is hella expensive - insanely expensive
