Topeka ProSolo
Results aren't yet up, but I saw an update on another board -- after the first day of the Topeka Pro, our prolific friend and board member James Yom (PilotSH) is in third place, the top S2000 and the top car on regular R-compounds at an event plagued by rain. First place is Carter Thompson in his Hoosier Dirt Stocker-shod 350Z; second is Chris Lindberg is a bumped Mustang, also on Dirt Stockers, 0.8 seconds behind. James is 0.3 s back of Chris on A3S04s; Mark Sipe (TeamZ4) is another 0.2 s back of James on street tires.
That's it -- I move to have James banned from any events west of, say, Atlantic City.
Everything can change in a day at a Pro, so good luck on Sunday guys...

Final results are up! James ended up 2nd, 3 hundreths behind the FS car.
And... in AS.... an 04 S2K took the gold! I think I see the death of the 00-03 S2000 fast approaching. Anybody need an '03 with 19k miles, Elda bar, Saner FSB, Spugen single and a spare set of stockers? Pay off my loan ($28k) and it's all yours.

Mark Sipe's left (?) side time in his Z4 was two tenths faster than the AS winning S2000's, and his best scratch was almost a half second clear (on a sub-30 second course). Scratch for scratch, he was over 1.5 seconds faster than James on that side.
The Topeka results are another data point, but I don't think they show the "death of the '00-'03". Small sample size, bad conditions on Saturday, and perhaps some event weirdness as well judging by the times.

Scratch times are rather meaningless. There's no way to know how much distance was saved or how much extra speed was carried due to not having to miss the cone. All I meant was that the 04 has been proving pretty competitive in AS. The chances of getting to stay in BS get slimmer by the day.

Ok, here it is from the horse's mouth:
day one was miserable. The rain was like an automatic sprinkler. As soon as it started to slighty dry, the rain would just start coming down again! I counted that happening at least 4 times on saturday. I couldn't touch Carter and Lindberg with the Dirt Stockers vs my A3S04s no matter how smooth I was.
Sunday: Mostly dry but cloudy. The left course was fairly dry, but the right side definitely still had a lot of standing water on certain spots.
Me: I was happy with my right side runs. I just couldn't get it any faster than that due to the various spots of water on the course that soaked the tires for the next turn. Left side was a different story. Started out on the left side, red lit, then on the second run I was so worried about making time that I overcooked a turn, and almost came to a complete stop just to avoid hitting a cone and have a clean run. I feel that with a competent driver (NOT me) behind the wheel, the S2000 could have easily done a mid 27. If I can come almost to a stop and still do a 29.0, I think you see my logic.
Sipe: The 2 DNFs on sunday were weird. The first DNF was because he did not "correctly" exit the post-finish box, resulting in a DNF. IMO, that part was poorly designed and executed, and many people ended up getting DNFs (myself included, the first run on the left side). On his second run, the standing water got the best of him and he looped the car. It's a shame that doesn't have a decent right time to go along with his smoking left time!
As for the course, I hated it. Too busy, no imagination, no choice of line, and a lot of sections was in between first and second gear. It required rowing the gears several times on a 28 second course... and even then it wasn't that fast.
As for AS, congrats to the S2k guys, although I would like to add that although the driver drove the car well, timing was a factor here. The more cars ran, the dryer/cleaner the course got. The winner of AS was actually the 2nd driver on Sunday, and the dryer conditions defintely played a role in his win.
In the Super Challenge, me, Carter, and his dad Jim qualified. Interestingly, I was paired with Carter for the first round. On the first run, I was faster than Carter by .3, but I coned it ... On the other side, I redlit by .002 seconds!!! GRRRRRRRRR The weather for the challenge was sunny and DRY.
OK, time for sleep. Topeka rains, 30 mph+ winds and the combination of them have really taken a toll on my body...
Wow, that was an expensice .030 I lost to......
