Great comments so far. Thank you guys. The Ram diesel is a good one but is about 35K. The Taco and Frontier are about 25K. However, I found a 15 F150 2.7 ecoboost "sport" for 28.700.

I've heard the 2.7 mileage isn't any better since it's almost always on the turbo even when not towing.

I tow the s2000 with a Honda ridgeline. Trailer is about 1600lbs, total about 4500lbs. I run about 400 lbs tongue and it trailers perfect. No sway, or scary moments. Brakes are great. Power is adequate but not bad. If you don't mind being in 3rd gear 75+ up hills is not a problem. Actully I passed my buddy up a hill when he was towing his lotus in enclosed trailer with his f150.

You can tow with a midsize v6 truck, get a tranny cooler, fresh fluids and trailer brakes with a controller is a must!

I love having a all Honda rig. Good luck

thinking out of the box, you could find an older solid frame, rear drive, eighties/nineties chevy wagon or cadillac. interesting tow vehicle capable of 5000lbs.

I've towed my LeMons BMW (also about 2700 pounds) on a U-Haul with my 2015 Tacoma. The 6 speed is excellent for it. The engine has most of it's torque up high, so you have to wring it out a bit, but it was very capable. I wouldn't hesitate to take the same setup over Vail pass, but the truck definitely wouldn't do it quickly.

FWIW, I wound up with my Taco because I wanted something with a manual transmission that could tow. I've been very happy with it. The new one is officially rated up to 6800 lbs (double cab, 4wd) so you can basically tow any decently weighted car on an open trailer.

I think you're on the right track with the 2.7. Just check 2 things; tow rating and payload. Ford has many different tow ratings depending on equipment (rear gear ratio, trans cooler, etc). Also check the payload, its everything you can put in, and on the truck (including hitch and tongue weight). This is easy, it's on the drivers door or door jamb.

Also, on a 15, you should be getting at least 8-9 k off sticker.

Here's a good video of real world mileage test.

I got a 16' Tacoma for a good deal. The 15' Fords have nice discounts but in the end I didn't want a big truck and to be honest I don't like Ford quality. I know they last forever but quality never seems to be from the current year.

I like a big ole diesel engine, but didn't want to spend Porsche money on one, so I got a 2001 Ram 2500 a few years ago. It's been a pretty good truck, although a touch louder than I'd like (engine). I put on an exhaust, 3-position on-the-fly select-able switch tuner, and some good shocks and I can't say the mere 5,000 lbs I tow even remotely stresses it. It also gets over 20 MPG doing 75mph on the freeway (not towing - towing is more like 17).
