Weight of your race S2k
Hi guys,
Was hoping to get some additional tips on how one can strip more weight out of the S2k.
My current caged and seam welded S2k weighs 2450 lbs dry but it does have a 90 litre fuel tank and diff/gearbox coolers for endurance racing.
I read an article on street tuning featuring the Opera S2000 with a claimed weigh of just 2000 lbs, and am wondering if that is even true.
Additional weight i hope to save:
1. Downforce wide fibreglass fenders - 20lbs
2. Hollow out A pillars (strength no longer needed since theres a cage) - 10lbs
3. Strip transmission tunnel of reinforcements (I read that someone did this before, but not sure how) - 20 lbs
4. Lose the CR wing for an APR unit - Not sure how much weight id save here, couldnt get weight on either. But the CR wing feels awfully heavy!
5. Carbon bonnet?? - suspect the savings here are negligible since the oem one is already aluminum.
Even so, this works out to be just 60-70lbs. A long way off from the 200-300 im looking to gutt. Due to race rules, i will have to keep working headlights and tailights.
Any tips will be greatly appreciated. Thanks

there are a few build threads in this forum, not sure if you've seen them, here's one that you might find useful: https://www.s2ki.com/s2000/topic/910...ving-ambition/
You could do a carbon trunk skin pretty easily to save a few lbs. I take it the trunk springs are already removed?
You could loose the bumper beams if you haven't already - youd probably want to fab something up to replace them though.
Carbon fiber doors would save some weight, but are $$$
Do you need to keep a glass windshield for your racing class? There is some weight savings there.
If you can go to a lighter wheel, you can save weight there as well.
Just a few easy things I can think of right now.

Mine is 1095kg
Still about 20kg to go from the boot (trunk)
I've lost my headlights, bumper bars, brake shields, doors stripped bare, and all sorts of other parts lighter than OEM. Full plastic windows front / side / rear etc.
With the boot springs removed, i'm totally amazed by the weight when you lift it by hand. I have an APR wing on mine and it weighs so much it's scary.
900kg (2000 lbs) is fantasy imo.

losingThe OEM hardtop will save you some weight. The top itself weighs nothing but the glass window is heavy. We supply lightweight race windows with our tops to keep weight down. Our aluminum hardware will shed a few lbs over the oem stuff. Our total top weight to around 20lbs or less with the mugen style...less with our amuse style which will debut soon
Which sanctioning body do you endurance race with?
Can you post pics of the 90L fuel cell?
- Mine is in the tool area
Are you N/A or FI?
Like krazik, I'm racing in SCCA STU category (working headlings/tailights, factory dash, 17x8 wheels). Class minimum for 2.2L is 2420lbs. I'm about 200lbs over weight =(

I removed the trans tunnel bracing on my build
You have to drill many spot welds, it wasn't easy but it was about 22lb if I recall so well worth while.
Looks like mine will scale around 2360 with steel doors with intrusion protection left in.

Hey guys thanks for all the responses. My reponses accordingly:
1. Cant do a carbon trunk as my fuel breaks run thru the trunk lid - i dont tink i can cut carbon can i? (see subsequent pics). I also forgot that i already have fibreglass doors that did save a significant amount of weight.
2.DF fenders only save 8 lbs? Bummer!
3. 1095kg - Looks like we are roughly the same weight. Im 1110 in metric terms. I am comtemplating losing my gbox and rear diff oil coolers which should be worth at least 10kg as im doing mainly sprint races now despite the car being built for endurance.
4. Rockstar - Do you have a link to the hardtops you sell? I have a copy mugen top which i regret buying as i cant get the side window seals to seal properly. My rear windshield is already lexan.
5. Andrew - Do you have pictures of this work done? Im not sure what to remove to be honest.
6. KRazik - i want to be where u are!
7. Crack nut - i am based in Asia so rules very different. I do need to keep the headlights and tail lights and glass front windshield plus full fia cage.
