Depends on the surface traction, tires and purpose. You want to keep the engine in VTEC if possible. An 8k RPM launch implies an awfull sticky surface. 5-7k RPM is more usual.

8K is for kumho's on really nice Concrete. Hoosiers on nice concrete need between 6500 and 7000. Kumho's on asphalt need about 7k, and hoosiers on asphalt well we haven't figured that one out yet but we were launching at 6K at petersburg and it seemed alright except I got beat off the line 4 for 4 times by a miata.

Hey Ian,
By the way, my Diff went out after those two launches in G-ville at 7K.
I had put Synth. Diff. fluid in (by the way, don't do that) and that may have contributed to it, but I did get it replaced under warranty, so really it was just a pain in the ass, but no money out of pocket.

I usually launch right around 4 or so and that gets the tires spinning enough to heat up but not so much spin that you're just sitting at the line smokin'.

Ian, did you race this weekend?

PENROD- How many miles on the car when this happened? How often do you compete? Was it the Mobil 1 fluid?

I think the difference in launch is easily .5 second between a 4-5k and 6+k RPM launch. Not every course can use a hard launch (hard turn immediately after the start) but more moderate starts certainly can be useful at higher RPM. The local event this past weekend had me gaining over 1 sec. on my last run, partly due to the fact that I was spinning all the way around the kink right after the start. Helped me position as well as accelerate. All other launches allowed the tires to bite before the kink. Shoot, 0-60 is about 1 sec. different between a 4k RPM launch and a 6k+ launch...

On the street w/ Pilots 6k no exceptions. At the track between 7-8k, oh and if you keep doing this you will blow your clutch, trans and especially the rear. Just once at the track can easily blow the rear.
