Alright! Some momentum to this thread.
The reason I bring up Elda in particular is because it is minimally invasive, in terms of what mods you have to make to your car. Big deal if you lose an inch or 2 in seat travel - IMHO, an inch or two in this case doesn't matter (unlike other areas).
If you want a bar or cage certified to some competitive sanctioning body's standards, then by all means go get one custom fab'd............. But there's a sh*tload of S owners who would like one for non competitive track days and even for street use.
I have a friend who's been in a coma for 3.5 years from a head injury..... different scenaro (offshore boating), but same general idea. A decent helmet is a start (BTW, how many people (in ragtops) do you even see on the street riding with a helmet?)....... but you've got the potential for major spinal damage in these cars w/o a bar that offers better coverage than the factory hoops.
Also, if it is removable, it's going to retain some decent resale value, for those who would sell their S to a broader market (i.e. the general public).
Just talking out loud.... I'll shut up now.

If you're doing custom you should do weld it in.

The problem is that I'm not at all convinced that a roll bar is safe for the street, it being a solid hunk of steel on which to bonk one's un-helmeted head.
So, my preference would be for a bolt-on, if that can be made so that it's "solid enough." I'll have to figure out what "solid enough" means, but I'm only just starting to look into the matter.
Because I don't think that street-driving, without a helmet, with a roll bar, is safe.
I'm tall, and I have yet to sit in an S2000 with a roll bar in which it is not possible, or even likely, that my head would strike the roll bar in case of an accident.
On the track, I'm using a helmet, so my head's reasonably well protected. On the street I'm not, and my head is quite vulnerable. And since the likelihood of an accident on the street is at least as great as the chance of a roll-over on the track, I don't know that a permanent roll bar is a net gain for a daily driving car.
