Wink mirror & no side views?
Anyone know of any regulations for side view mirrors? I googled, targeting nasa and scca (prepared class) and nothing came up other than people saying they use aftermarket.
I'm looking to drop them all together and just use a big 5 panel rear view. Do they provide a wide enough view angle? I still DD my car and my local law says only have to have a mirror allowing rearward view of at least 200 ft. I also ___ALWAYS___ turn head when merging/switching lanes.
I figure it's decent way to decrease drag as well as maybe save 2-4 lbs.

not to rain on your parade, but 2-4 lbs is not worth saving especially if you still drive your car daily. god forbid you have to parallel park. and not to mention safety. i mean if your local law allows you to remove the side mirrors go ahead and do so if you wish. i think the wink mirror would be beneficial if you had a halo type seat since it obstructs your side view. i cant comment how much or how effective wink mirrors are since i have yet to see anyone here with them. and personally i think the car would look weird without the side views.
you'd have to try it I drive a chumpcar with that setup and it sucks not having any side mirrors for me
Just from looking at the car I think the mirrors push the air out round the back of the car and onto the wing

Personally, I don't think you'll gain anything by it unless it's a pure autocross vehicle like the one you posted. Most racing/track folk want increased visibility as once you strap on a HANS (or other H&N restraint system), your visibility is limited by mobility. A lot of drivers even add small spotter mirrors in addition to the larger rear view mirrors and their side mirrors.
I use a Hans, recaro pro racer "halo" type seat, side view mirrors and Wink rear view mirror.
The wink mirror gives you a very wide view, however, the farther to the sides the more the view is not linear.
Therefore I'd recommend you keep the side views, as I always use them to check clearance when passing. Much more realistic. I do however highly recommend the wink mirror. It greatly increases situational awareness at a quick glance

Although I don't use one on the S2000, I do have a Wink Mirror on my MGA. I've cut it down to three panels.

Although it's really cheap, I'm not sure the Wink Mirror is the best option. You will likely get a great view of the roll bar, hardtop and wing. But whether you will actually see any cars behind you is open to question, especially with all the business as shown in post #3.
On my set up, I have to look pretty far behind to ID the cars coming up. Then once I have an idea what's coming, I can more or less anticipate their presence and location when they get close. But on first glance, all I really see is my roll bar.
Moreover, I still have a blind spot on each side of the car with the Wink. All of the Wink mirrors are flat.
I would love to get three of these for the MGA, one for the center rear view and one for each wing:

Although I can't speak for SCCA or NASA racing, in vintage, most organizations require at least two mirrors. The problem in my experience, is that two mirrors aren't enough. I would go only with convex.
Also, just as an aside, when you are holding on for dear life in a corner with a car on your rear quarter, you can't be turning your head and looking around to see if it is safe to dive in for the apex.

I had a 5 panel wink mirror installed for a while. there was zero benefit with a hardtop installed. In fact, it was worse because it rattled and vibrated making it hard to visualize clearly and fast. I went back to stock very quickly because of that. Tried it on track and street

Even with turing my head around with every lane change I've come close to hitting cars multiple times. You absolutely need to keep your side mirrors. I had no idea how much of an extra view they give you over the rear view and even turning your head.
