350Z or s2k?
I made this same exact decision 2 months ago, and I chose the S2k. I chose it for the following reasons: the new Z is going to be ALL over the road, especially with the extensive marketing they're doing for it. You're gonna see multiple Zs every time you go for a drive by next year. The S is a superior auto-x machine, and I love to auto-x. I wanted a convertible since I live in sunny south florida. I personally think the S looks sleeker and prefer the "sleek" look to the boxy "sporty" look(that is all preference.) The Z is more cushy, more comfortable, and easier to drag race. The Z has a much more dampened suspension so as not to feel bumps, while the S is sitting on a rock hard suspension that allows for virtually no body roll, but bumps are easily felt. The Z will most likely be easier to mod. The Z is fun to drive in traffic and on the streets, but it's weight makes it difficult to compete with how easy it is to throw the S around. If you want a sporty car that pulls hard while being comfortable at the same time go for the Z. If you want a car that begs to be driven, and NEEDS to be driven almost to perfection in order to extract max performance, go with the S. The S is much less forgiving than the Z, but much more rewarding.
I will agree with Xpander for the most part. I love the Z because in real world applications, You can't beat (for me) low end torque and HP. I can cruise in 4th and never downshift to have fun, it will just pull from 2400 to 5500 STRONG with a neat Surge at around 3.7-4KRPM. I haven't riden in a S2K, but the suspension is plenty tight for me (having owned a 300ZX TT) and is not cushy. Very minimal body roll and very comfortable to drive. Traction control, Xenon, Limited Slip, 6-Speed can all be had for $28.5K, less then a new S2K. As for there being alot ALL OVER THE ROAD, this statement is oft repeated and not understood. There are only going to be 7000 Z33's in the whole country until Jan-Feb of next year. Then it will take a full FOUR 1/2 years to reach the amount of Boxters there are on the road (with around 120K+ Boxter's right now). By that time I will either own another car, or a special edition Z33, if they come out with one. How many Boxters do you really see a day? I see alot in L.A. but I still notice them and think they are sweet cars. Def. test drive both though, as the style of driving, handleing and fun factors differ in both. Good Luck!

The 350z will not be as common as you think, don't let the naysayers discourage you.
However I agree with the first poster
- try both cars
- try with your family
- think about how long you want to keep your new car
- what are you buying the car for? speed? comfort? legacy? sporty feel?
S drivers will always be impartial to the S (because they bought it) and so will Z drivers. I do PLENTY of homework before I go out buying cars and I picked the Z over many cars (S was bottom of my list because it was a small car with a soft top, I'm not really into soft tops).
The reasons why I picked the Z was :
- to add to my growing collection of Zs (once you buy a nice one, you never want anything else)
- its fast enough! and its going to be faster with the number of aftermarket parts/upgrades that will be available later
- it has a lot of character derived from a winning formula (the Z)
- its a HEAD TURNER! Well, I get heads turned on all of my cars, but the Z really looks special. You have to see it in person and on the road to appreciate it
- there are so many Z enthusiasts around the world, its very easy to seek advice on current and older Zs, they just have a legacy unmatched by other cars
From where I live, its hardly sunny or warm, so there's no need for a soft top. That is probably the main reason why I don't look at soft tops.
I say there are heaps of potentials in both cars in terms of aftermarket enhancements, but like in any car they cost money. Bear in mind that the S cost more than the Z. I'm sure you could invest in a lot of things in the Z before it cost as much as the S with a little more. I'm not really into buying really really expensive cars for the same type of performance.

I think maybe in the land down under the pricing is different on cars? In the states there are Z's that are slighly cheaper than the S and Zs that are more expensive(when the convertible comes out it will be considerably more than the S)....depending on options. If you saw the intense advertising campaigns nissan is pulling in the states, I think you'd agree that there will be many on the road. I have never in my life seen a car so highly peddled on TV commercials. Nissan really loves to toot their own horn.
the reason i dont think the Z will be so common is that not everyone has the money for an extra 2-door sports car. goes the same for any sports car actually... i have had a S and i have only riden in a Z, the suspension is very taught in the Z as well as the S. But the S, you can tell, is a lttle more stiffer. i mean you can tell the difference.

Please do not mistake me for an advertising agent, but despite whether the Z will be common or not, just drive it for yourself as you will be the one driving it not anyone else.
The S is probably more expensive than the Z in Australia (and probably among other countries). To me, the Z feels like a complete car. I feel like I'm driving a car, not a hairdresser's car.

Z has alot of low end torque..
it is easier to launch than the s2k..
U gotta love the torque!
The s2k has a 9k redline.
and it has 240hp out of a 4 cycl..datz pretty impressive
