986 is the model # for the Boxster.

986 is the designation for the Boxster, like the 993/996 is the type of 911.

Correct. Porsche uses three digit designations for it's cars and some owners prefer the numerical designation badges to the model names. The Boxster is the 986, the Current Carrera (911) is the 996. The previous 911 is the 993 and the next version will be the 997.

Bottom line.......you saw a Boxster w/a 986 Badge.

You might be mistaken and saw a 968 (the last iteration of the 924/944 series of cars).

Doubt it was a 968. They look nothing like Boxsters, and they're not that quick.

OK, thanks for all the input, but any ideas as to why it was soooo quick? It has much larger tires than any Boxster I have ever see and a competely different sound.

There are a few guys around here running around in Boxsters with modified Carrera motors in them. They are plenty quick. There is a Porsche HP outfit doing the conversions.

I have seen one with a beta supercharger kit on it. It was supposed to add 70-80 hp to the car.
