Default Accidental kill...? Z06

Just getting on the highway from work, still braking stook in at 175 miles, accelerating from the on ramp about 60-65 in 4th. I spyed a yellow Z06 in rearview mirror. It looked like it accelerated to catch a look at the "black beauty". Instead of taking a look, Z man accelerated hard to pass me, I couldn't handle it! Heart started pounding, palms got sweaty. God twisted my arm or should I say revs and before I knew it, I quickly pulled ahead shifting to 5th and bringing out the VTEC for the first time (sorry to all you break-in gurus). This obviously caught this Z man by surprise. He quickly pulled in behind me and took the first exit ramp with tail between the pipes. I know, I know don't VTEC for 1st 600 miles, but honestly, I couldn't help myself! I promise I'll be good for the next 425 miles! I only got it into the mid 7000 rpms, but the quick 60-65 to 85+ was phenomenal, wow what a ride!

Any ideas for restaint?

First things first: Are you sure it was a Z06? From the front, they are nearly impossible to distinguish from a standard C5 (the only difference being the wire mesh inserts in the front vents).

Secondly: Regardless if it was a regular C5 or Z06, he either wasn't trying very hard or was a really bad driver.

Thirdly: Don't do what you did again. Heed the break-in period.

Lastly: Avoid all temptation to VTEC until you break 600 miles. Don't pay attention to anybody who wants to play. It's tough to do though.

hmm...you must have the S2000 type-superduper to kill a Z06!!
0-60 in right around 4.2...1/4 mile in 12.6 or lower....and you wupped in the S2000.... I want your car!!

(just ribbing you a bit...no way an S2000 can beat a Z06 though)

Read this.

Sounds to me like he was speeding and you merged in front of him slower than him so he changed lanes to go by. Then you gunned it before he could go by, and he just moved back into the right lane (probably wondering why you even bothered) and took his exit. Sorry, straight out on a freeway I don't care who is driving the z06. He could be in 3rd 4th or 5th at those speeds and still beat an s2000. A z06 just has too much engine. So when it comes down to driver skill it only matters who's driving the s2000 cause that'll decide how much you lose by.

Anyway, enjoy your s2k because (after you break it in!) there are many other cars which you CAN surprise. And as long as there are curvy roads, you won't want to go in a straight line anyway

I have encountered a Z06 and it was not even close.

He was behind me at a light. We were turning right on red. I went and he had to stop and check traffic. I took off hard (no squeal) and I grabbed second at redline and kept going.

Well, as soon as he turned and got going he was on my ass before I got to third. That car is wicked fast. Anyone that says they beat a Z06 doing anything wasn't really racing a Z06 and that includes cars with blowers.

If you look at the August issue of Car and Driver, you will see that the "normal" Corvette has a top gear acceleration from 30-90 in something like 11 seconds (I left my copy on the plane, so I am roughing it). If XRMD ran into a non Z06 Vette in top gear, then yes he could have "smoked it." I say non Z06 because the mag didn't have the stats for the Z06.

FYI-The Vette was slowest of the four cars in this portion of the test. It, however, ranked first in the overal comparison.
