Default AP2 vs Cayman S

was taking a drive feeling pretty moody with the top down, doing some soul searching over a drive. pulled up at the lights next to a blue cayman and i stopped just a little behind cos i was wondering if it was an S.

chked out the badge and yeah, cayman S pretty stock looking! i've test driven a cayman and pulled with a regular cayman which were both unimpressive.

the owner was a youngish dude with spiked up hair. he looked over and gave me that "dont even try loser" look. that did it. you going down boy!

when the lights went green, he moved off. i wasnt sure he wanted to go but then he gave it gas and took a left filter at high speed. i stayed in vtec and overtook him on the outside in the curve.

next up i was level with him at some lights with nice straight road in front of us. this time i was sure he was gonna go. Green and we hit it. i think he's an auto because i didnt really hear a proper spin from a launch but i launched at about 4k.
by the end of 3rd i was in front by 1-1.5 car lengths and he gave up before we hit 4th. One for the S!

i have an AP2 totally stock with cat in except for a j's dual fx 70 rs.

maybe he put an S badge hoping that he could get away with it hehe
could be

CS's are quick, but they're not crazy fast. and there's no need for the guy to be cocky or a prick. oh well, he got what he deserved.

and for a low 13s car vs high 13s car, if you got a good launch to his tiny bit of wheelspin, that could have given you enough of a starting mph advantage to carry you ahead.

my buddy with an 03 Accord V6-6spd took off away from my stock MY06 at about 20mph. i downshifted to give chase, and i hadn't gained any ground on him up to ~70 (we stopped) because of the significant mph advantage he had gained at the beginning.

higher starting velocity >> slightly better acceleration
likewise, good launch > slightly better acceleration

dude, i tell it like it was. whether his auto was the downfall for the kill, its still a kill.
I don't understand why people think that autos are slower. The same car, with the same engine and gearing will be faster with an auto for 2 reasons:

1. Off the start --> clutch slips until it is fully engaged. This results in a <100% transfer from the engine to the wheels. In an automatic, the torque converter throws many advantages. First, there is no "slip" the hydraulic characteristics allow for a torque multiplication at lower RPMs (defined by the characteristics of the torque converter itself) which KILL manuals from a dig.

2. Shifting. Manuals --> there is a break from the power plant and the wheels during the shift. No mater how fast you do it, or if you power shift or not, there is a disconnect and NO ONE can perform perfect shifts, every time. Auto--> with the planetary gears, there is no disconnect from the engine to the wheels. The transmission is always engaged. Also, shift points are set so that the transmission shifts at the perfect time, every time.

Funny cars and top fuel drag racers use manually shifted planetary gear sets to race. it just makes sense.

I agree more and more sports cars are AUTO, these transmission's are not "slushboxes" anymore...........

Automatic in sport cars is a SIN. Like flying a F-16 jet with the Auto-pilot on.
