After a horrible 2-hour drive in the pouring rain, we finally arrived at Reliant Center, location of the 2003 Houston Auto Show. The drive was slow - I was following a fugly Aztek for a good 30 miles to add insult to injury. And to top it off, the cars were bland; the only cars worth mentioning are the 360 Spider, Enzo, 575M Maranello, SL55, RS6, and maybe the Vanquish. There weren't many concepts out there. Oh, the Ford GT was also on display...

Anyway, the drive home was a b!tch. On 610, traffic was backed up about 2 miles, through which traffic was either stopped or moving at a snail-like 5mph. The lanes were merging from 5 into 1, so you can imagine...

Anyway, I was in the correct lane (the lane that all others were merging into), and the C5 with gramps at the wheel was in the "Exit Only" lane, trying to get into my lane at the last moment. Because I was hanging back to let others in, the C5 thought I was letting his lane-cutting ass into line, so he tried to squeeze in. Being in the bad mood that I was, I didn't want to let him in so I promptly gave it a little throttle to close the gap. The C5 didn't want to give it up though; he didn't give up the few inches he had gained.

So the race was on: I closed in the gap in front of me - I was about 3 inches off the bumper. But the Vette was still going strong. So intent on getting that particular spot was he, that he was even driving through the mud and gravel... in his C5!

I finally gave in but was all over the guy's ass. He dropped his speed down to about 35mph, though there was already enough room to accelerate to normal freeway speeds - I was pissed. I flicked my high-beams furiously, complemented by a few jabs of the horn, but to no avail. 35mph.

As soon as the single lane had opened up back to the normal 5, I pulled out alongside the Vette, and proceeded to give him the finger, plus a few dirty looks (the whole time while my Dad is cursing me for my road rage). The C5 guns it, momentarily spinning the tires before pulling about a car length.

I promptly follow suit and hammer the throttle. I lose another car length as I have to half-throttle it to let the tires stop spinning. The torque steer was massive and almost uncontrollable - the power was switching from left to right, simultaneously causing the car to jump the opposite direction. (370 fwhp and no LSD, see.) I was seesawing the steering wheel as I tried to keep the van along a relatively straight line.

As soon as the tires started to hook up, I began feeding in more power until I was at WOT... I'm just reading 50mph, and the C5 has pulled another 1/2 car length on me.

At 60mph, it closed down to about 1.5 car lengths, and at 80mph, I knocked it down to less than a car length. I held the throttle fully open for a bit longer, finally killing it at 125ish mph. The C5 was just in my blind spot - I beat him, but I did not spank him.

I'm convinced I would've pulled even harder on him if not for the massive wheelspin and wheel hop (too much power and wet road will do that to you...), but a win's a win...

Chevy Cor-what?

P.S. After my little run, I remember my dad saying, "Ay nako... Sira ang ulu mo! (sp?)" Translation: "Sheesh... You're crazy!"

He's talking about the turbocharged Quest. I believe him. Any car can be made fast. A 3L formula 1 engine makes 700+ NA. It's just a question of what you're willing to compromise/spend.
