EVO VIII vs. S2000
Just thought that I would share this race with you guys. This morning I raced an S2000 from a stoplight. Nice guy but wasn't able to chat long so I'm not sure if his car is stock or not. I'm assuming it is but it could also be likely that he had replaced his airfilter/intake. I didn't do the big clutch drop because we all know that answer so we just pulled off the line quickly. The S2000 got a better launch and had his nose about 3 feet in front. It was pretty even all the way to the begining of 4th (~70mph). If anything he (S2000) might have pulled a foot but was not pulling away...dead even.
So we've all heard that the EVO should be quicker so here are some explainations on what could account for the even race:
1.) One of the EVO tuners has seen on his dyno that the EVO's power can vary significantly. On his dyno (which reads low but that is another story) he has seen stock EVO's dyno anywhere from 165 whp to 205 whp with the average about 190 whp on 91 octane. So maybe I have a weak EVO
2.) It was pretty hot and humid this morning. This has a greater effect on a turbo charged car than a NA car. I'll probably see this guy this winter so it will be interesting what the outcome is later.
3.) Driver error. Well I didn't misshift or slow shift at all. Also if the EVO is faster then while I was in gear I should have been pulling but I wasn't.
4.) The S2000 had an air filter/intake.
In the end it was a good clean race. Props to the S2000 for taking the lead and holding it.

Nice one! I agree, heat and humidity kills any FI setup.
I'm suprised that you didn't take the lead right off the line even if he got a better launch... AWD and all...

The reason for not taking the lead off the line is because I really wanted to gauge the S2000 acceleration versus the EVO (and save my clutch). Doing a high rpm launch would shoot me out to a couple car length lead and it would be harder for me to judge if the S2000 pulls me or if I pull him.
At lunch I got to thinking about power to weight and maybe I have a strong EVO because the power to weight ratio of the S2000 is a little better than the EVO, plus the EVO has a bit more drivetrain loss:
S2000 is 2800/240 = 11.67 #/hp
EVO8 is 3298/271 = 12.17 #/hp

i raced my Evo from a roll against my own 2003 Cobra...which clearly crushes the Evo if driven by anyone other than a 90 year old lady
I also raced the Evo (driven by my dad) with my GSR powered Civic Hatch from about 50mph to 90mph.... it was damn close... i don't really think there was a clear winner.
The gas you put into the Evo makes a fair difference... I always put in Sunoco 94.....
I was going to do a no launch Qtr Mile this past weekend, but I did not want anyone seeing me do it...... "i someone run a 14.1 Qtr mile in an Evo....... what a tool".

I see videos and stories of both outcomes. Each story always has a clear win too. It's strange, I think it may have to do with who's on the power band at first or something.
Scot, you shoulda done a no launch drag. I'm really curious to know how it'll do without the risky launch.

I wish we had sunoco94. I've tried several brands of gas so far. I go by the very accurate "seat of the pants" dyno for testing. Here's how I rank them:
1.) Shell
2.) Chevron
3.) Exxon
4.) tie Randals (grocery store here in Texas)
4.) tie Conoco
I still haven't tried Mobil, BP, or 76. There was a big difference between 1 and 4...between 1 and 3 it's pretty close.
DJAuggie - Anything less than 93 will cause the ECU to retard. The difference between 91 and 93 is about 10 hp with the EVO. Poor Cali guys...
