Default Food For Thought

On Newsday's front Page today - Monday, 7/25/01, is the following story:

http://www.newsday.com/news/daily/lidrag25.htm

Yesterday a Lamborghini raced a Corvette - the Lamborghini swerved into oncoming traffic to go around a car - and did a head-on into a Volvo. The Lamborghini and Volvo drivers were both killed. The Corvette then went out of control and hit a tree. The wives of both drivers in the Corvette and Lamborghini were injured. None of the drivers were especially young, none were inexperienced "kids."

The "P.S." is that the driver of the Corvette, who did not per se cause the accident, is now charged with Manslaughter. I see an analogy to drag racing and unprotected sex with a stranger. You never know what type of person you are actually dealing with in the other car - and what happens to them is going to affect you.

At least three families were ruined, and children are now fatherless as a result of 5 seconds of thrill.

The license plate on the Corvette reads "Love To Accelerate" (in encrpyted form).

and they dont regularly staff ambulances at the Nuremburg Raceway because Germany's outlook on responsibility is frightening.

As I never understood the American laws about anything. (you can tell I am international), I do not agree with one thing here. Racing is not safe and is not a responsible action (depending on the condition) but the corvette driver being charged with manslaughter???

You may not agree with me but here no one takes responsibility for their action in this country. I think charging the corvette driver with manslaughter is too much. He may be responsible with the damage he caused and the laws he broke (racing, speeding) but IMHO manslaughter is absurd. I nowhere see teh corvette driver responsible for the deaths caused by the other drivers accident.

This being said I am sorry for the losses caused by this incident.

PS: I think this will also shut people up who blame younger people racing on public roads.

I also had a negative experience with some young kid driving a Lamborghini, on the freeway, he tailgated me in my old modified Eclipse Spyder GS-T as I was exiting an off ramp that dumps into a lane with no oncoming traffic. I kinda suckered him into the turn traveling quickly, then nailed in mid turn, he tried to impress his girl friend and gave it gas only to wind up sideways.
One thing is a little fun, another is irresponsability.
As Dirty Harry used to say, "a man's gotta know his limitations".
