Trere are pretty cheap 'overide' parts for this. It will fool the CPU into thinking that it has XX boost while it really has something esle. They are pretty common and most 'overboosted' WRXs around here use it .... it's pretty cheap ... like $50.
check valves?

DavidM is correct, there are chips on the market which alter the amount of fuel, etc and the boost controller will work. however, if u constantly use a boost controller be prepared to pay for the consequences which i inevitably did. had a MY99 rex, bolt-ons,boost controller, etc had it for 2 and a half years and there were problems galore with the timing belt. the new rex's that u guys in the US have finally gotten are a better build quality then the previous years but aren't as lethal. will u guys be getting the sti's or mitsu evo's? coz they are very fast.

It's just a fail-safe so that the turbo doesn't boost too much to run lean...that's my obvious guess.

Uggh actually that is incorrect. Most guys are buying $50 manual boost controllers and running 13.8 with just that mod. I have a manual boost controller with my stage 2 chip and will be buying a AVC-R.

Without the proper fueling, etc. to go along with it then you are not doing much good.....
Yep, and you're likely doing more harm than good. Running lean = detonation = BANG! Broken parts.

The Lightning is a good example. Many people know the Eaton blower can still be fairly efficient at higher levels of boost (especially with the A-L intercooler), so they immediately think of swapping out lower blower pulleys for +4lb, +6lb, etc higher boost ones. The problem with the 5.4L modular engine is that the piston rods aren't usually up to it. However, many tuners have shown that the stock rods can handle +4lb of boost IF the truck NEVER goes into detonation. It's the detonation that snaps these things, and there are lengthy arguments about whose chip is best for bulding +X boost without snapping rods. Many racers have the $700 Manley rods dropped in so they never have to worry about it. Yet, there are many L owners with a stock engine running mid 12s (450+ rwhp) with a +4lb pulley/chip, having tens of thousands of miles without problems. It all depends on having a good tuner.
