Well, I found a stock LS1 Camaro ('99 6-speed) here in Austin (he replaced the stock lid and closed the exhaust cutout). We raced twice from a roll, and here's a video (1.5MB):

http://63.163.152.134/s2000_vs_ls1.avi

To watch the video, you might need the M-JPEG decoder which can be found here: http://www.leadtools.com/video-codec_download.htm

The races both went from 20mph to 110mph. We both had full street weight and 1/2 tank of gas. The Camaro had a passenger to film.

For the first race, we were even or the Camaro had a slight jump. By the end, he had 2-2.5 car lengths on me.

The second race was more interesting. We arranged so he would give me a 1 car jump, and then try to catch up. Well, by the end of the race my front bumper was at his door. So the total there is 1.5 cars.

The races basically affirmed what I already knew. But to those who were biased on either side:

1) A stock LS1 Camaro will not beat a S2000 by "buslengths." 2-4 cars in the 1/4 is realistic. The difference is enough that the S2000 will get an "occasional" win.

2) A S2000 will lose most if not all races against a LS1 from a roll, just like a stock Mustang GT would lose most if not all races against a S2000 from a roll.

3) A modded LS1 of any flavor will crush the S2000 in a drag race. And unfortunately, most LS1s driving around this part of the country are modded.

what year was the LS1?

Aren't the newer LS1s running much more HP than older ones? like early-mid 90s.

I saw the video and if Im correct, the LS1 gets about even with the S2000 by the end of 3rd gear, and end 4th gear is when he finally gets the S2000 by 1 length or so??? That's what it sounds like in the video. That puts them fairly close. (though I still have no misconceptions that the S2000 is faster, cuz its not) But it definitely puts them close. Although with the 1 length head start.... that would be 2.5 lengths at the end of 4th. right? What is the speed of a stock LS1 camaro at the top of it's 4th gear?

that was really cool of him to run you stock and let you have the video of it.

You're thinking of the LT1. The newer style Camaro's with the peanut shaped headlights are LS1's, the square shaped headlights are LT1's (which were indeed less powerful).

Stock Camaro with a "decent" driver wins well over 90% of the time from a stop, roll or any other straight line measurement.

I don't think the word "buslengths" was ever used. It certainly wasn't by me. I'd still love to run the world's best driver in a S with me in a bone stock Z28 and bet $500 per race. We can keep racing till the S driver runs out of cash.

You're absolutely right...in a strait line. But throw those 2 cars on an auto-x, and it's the Z28's driver that would be running out of cash.

Driver vs. driver, was never the original argument either, now was it??
Obviously any great driver could beat any poor driver in auto-x, no matter what car your driving.

The point I'm trying to make is that strait line racing, the Z-28 holds the advantage.

Auto-x the S2000 holds the advantage.

I don't care if me, you, your girlfriend or Jeff Gordon was driving, those facts cannot be disputed.

Glen,

I really don't think the Z28 LSI is not as much of a beast as you might describe. Yes they are powerful cars, but in terms of good drivers in both, the S will put up a fight. I have raced Z28's before, both LS1 and LT1's and I have lost some and won some, but all races were with good drivers. Remeber that all I had was a Spoon exhaust at the time. My point is that we shouldn't sit here and say this car is faster than that car type of thing, because in "Street Encounters" any car can win in a street race. It all depends on the driver....

How long before we break this argument down to what is really important... who has the bigger penis?

I actually find this debate quite entertaining. The majority of the players have been using the same argument since day one. Everyone agrees with everyone else's opinion/stories/experiences and then just reiterates their opinion/stories/experiences. Can't we move past this?

I will summarize.

Equal drivers, bone-stock cars:

1/4 mile - LS1
Auto-X - S2000
Road course - depends on course layout
Bench racing- depends on my mood that day

Real world (w/ different driving levels, conditions, car modifications, etc.)

1/4 mile- ???
Auto-X- ???
Road course- ???
Bench racing- depends who brought the beer.

I think I see a trend.....
