Default me vs a probe GT

This was an interesting encounter to say the least. This isn't a funny story, but an interesting one.

I saw a probe GT manual V6 with a body kit I wasn't too fond of, but it may also be a work in progress. We basically paced each other for quite some time. Every time he got next to me, I was hearing a raspy sound, and knew there had to be something under the hood. I also thought I kept hearing a spooling whining noise, but it was hard to tell. It sure as heck didn't sound stock though.

We eventually get a short run from 30-60mph. I was in 1st at 30mph when we went. He kept dead even with me to 60mph, though I started to pull just slightly. I then let off because of the police infested area we were in. He then let off, and we pulled into a lot. He told me he was impressed as hell with my car and said it was fast and awesome looking. I thanked him for the compliments and asked what he got. He told me he only had headers. I didn't question it there, but we went our seperate ways after a nod.

Now, I know a probe GT isn't that fast. And I was RIGHT IN the powerband for the S2k. And you all know I can damn well drive. I am seriously doubting all he had was headers. I've also never heard headers that sounded like that..... So, an interesting run to say the least.

gotta be more than headers. a good friend of mine (who thinks he's michael schumacher) has '97 Probe GT 5m. he has cat-back exhaust and cai. what i do to him in my stock s2k and my WRX is nothing short of embarassing (for him). if you run into him again, ask him what he really has, my buddy could use the tips.

I agree that a probe with just headers is not going to do that. Not saying it's the guy, but I saw a probe in SCC with the turbo(s) off of a Buick Grand National, or so the kid claimed. They never showed a picture of the engine bay. If the kid you raced had a turbo(s) and it wasn't tuned, this may explain him pacing you.

He could have just had headers with a KLZE engine, not the stock engine...KLZE's are fairly quick without mods...

Can a KLZE engine'd probe hit low 14's with just that and headers? Cuz that's what he'd have to do to keep up with me.

I had a 96 GT v6 Probe and turboed it and was running 13.9 with limited traction. Could have been boosting .... may have even been my old car... some guy up north bought it who knows.

If driven right a KLZE would probably pull off a high 14 without anything else...he said that he had headers and assuming that he had some bolt-ons, exh, int, any free mods...it could probably run mid 14's plus you had a short run with him...

It had to have a KLZE swap or some power adder. I had a borla cat bat, chip, advanced timing, air intake, and ported and polished intake and the best my probe did was 14.9 @ 92 mph. I think the KLZE swap puts the Probe at around 200 hp instead of the 165 hp of the normal engine. You can check probetalk. com and find out any info you want about that set up.

- I have seen a few probes around with grand national turbos in them. Maybe he had a similar set up??
