raced an Evo VIII
...went from a 45'ish mph roll on the highway, was in second gear. From Second to Third I was barely inching away, once I hit 4th I started really pulling, shut it down at 100'ish and was about 1 car ahead. I could have kept pulling but traffic was up ahead and didn't want to hit anyone
Was my friends new Evo, he has around 2k miles and I have about 3200 miles on my s2k. We're both stock.

yes I am a much better driver than my friend. But on the highway it is hard to screw up...however I never asked what he was shifting at.
I drove his car and was impressed with the power, but it felt cheap and I wasn't really comfortable driving it.

stock vs stock, from a roll the EVO and S2000 are about equal on average. One thing to remember is that the EVO's are dyno'ing +-20 hp so if you race a strong one, you will lose. If you race a weak one, you will win.
The EVO's and STi's are really only great cars if you run from a dig. Run from a roll and the S should be able to win. Them cars are HEAVY things because of the AWD, but they can launch like crazy!! Much of their 13.2-13.8 1/4 mile times is accounted for in the 60'. Don't they have pretty low traps? I'm not sure though.
As far as the +/- 20hp: thats weather and fuel type dependent, no? Here in South Florida, the hot humid climate isn't great for these turbos.
