Default S2000 vs. STi

Last night, on a completely car-free and safe bridge where no cops could sit, I ran into what appeared to be a stock STi. I know a bit about Subarus, and I could definitely say that the intake and exhaust sides of the STi were stock sounding. I have a T1R 63mm exhaust and a K&N filter. My top was down, I had about 3/4 a tank of gas, and it was about 55 degrees outside.

After he did a massive flyby on me without slowing down, we line up at 80mph. I punch it in 3rd gear after the 3rd honk and pull maybe a 1/4 car, if that. I shift to 4th perfectly, right before my rev limiter kicks in. As soon as I get to 4th, the STi walks. Like, really walks me. We shut down at 115-120 (not sure) with the STi ahead by maybe 2.5-3 cars and moving.

Does having the top down really hurt that badly? I heard someone once mention they ran two AP1s side by side, one with the top down, and they were even. Anyone know what speeds these cars went to? Anyone have similar experiences with stock STis in the higher gears? I'm thinking that the STi may have been running a MBC. A race like this kind of makes you feel that your car isn't running right.

Don't be alarmed about your car, I'm sure it's running fine .... I never race with my top down, at those speeds it can make a 3 car difference. Supposbly the sti's are supposed to be equal with a fairly stock s2k at those speeds, I havn't raced one on the freeway yet so I'm not sure. You have to be carefull though, I have seen sti's that look and sound stock and just blow the doors off of cars.

Top down does make a big diff.. maybe not 3 cars though. From what I've read, S2k is about even with an STI above 100mph. If you hit it again with top up and +1/4 start from 80-120, I imagine it would be pretty close.

Yah, i had raced my friends 06 STI from a 45 mph roll. He isn't the greatest shifter but the front of his car was prolly a couple of feet infront of mine until we hit about 110 and i started to pull a little =) let off about 115-120. If he was a better shifter he would have stayed infront of me probably the whole race.

with stock gears Im at about 7-7.5 rpms in third- that doesnt give you much of a pull in 3rd before immediately having to shift to 4th- I tried starting in 3rd when cruising at about 75-80 when I ran an evo on the freeway last week and the revs were to high- I ended starting our run in 4th which put me at about 6-6.5 rpms- maybe you should try and start in a gear that will allow you to pull for a little longer before having to shift- after all when your shifting your not accelerating.

of course my supercharger blows thru the higher rpms a little faster than a stock S2K, so to each his own-

This is true; in fact, normally you would be decelerating (although clearly, your velocity would still be positive). However, in my case, I have a relatively inexpensive mod that enables me to accelerate during shifting, although it's overall impact on the result of a race is still questionable. Look it up--it's called post-legume jet propulsion. The best part is, my car still looks stock.

Try it with the top up. I've seen crazy stuff where it makes a huge difference(about 5 cars)
