s2000 vs Viper
This is my first Street Encounter post. Today I ran into a new viper with dealer plates on it. There was some fat guy in sunglasses driving with a passenger. I think it was either a test drive or a couple of salesman taking it for a spin. Anyhow these guys were trying to get anyone to race. I pulled in behind him casually and he changed lanes and dropped back next to me romping on the gas over and over again. My exit was just ahead, it is a really nice s curve going up a slight incline, I take it daily at speed. Anyhow I dropped a couple of gears and accelerate hard for my exit. The viper is not in the exit lane and the freeway is dividing already so he drops back behind me and quickly catches up. Im doing about 90-95 now and the first turn in the s is coming up I keep the gas down and the viper is on my ass. I sweep through the first turn not looking back and then as I enter the second turn I hear wheels skiddin, I glance up at the rear view to see this brand new viper slide into the guard rail and then recover. I was'nt sure if anyone got hurt so I went back to where he hit the rail, it took me about 10 minutes and he was gone but there was a nice red racing stripe along the guard rail.
I have coil-overs some chassis mods and had my RA-1's on, that being said I think those guys were new to the viper and the new tires were prob not scrubbed in yet. I enjoy a little street encounter every now and then but I never want to see anyone get hurt or have their car damaged. I was definitely more concerned about the guys in the viper than I was about beating them on a s curve I know like the back of my hand.
My real toy is an AI series cobra which I prowl around in every now and then. Just wish I could get my S to keep up with my cobra. I would love to run a forced induction S to see how the S would do. Can't seem to justify pulling the trigger on a super charger for the S without seeing one in action.

I had a similar experience with a viper getting onto an On ramp. He was in front of me being a smart ass, and turning onto the off ramp is a 90 degree angle. He tapped the gas going into the corner and nearly spun it into the curb but just barely managed to recover.
A good viper driver will smoke an s2k. Period. But an inexperienced driver, especially someone who doesn't know how to drive rwd, is asking for trouble. There's so much power on tap for the viper that even the slightest throttle input at the wrong time can put you into a rail.
At least the vette has a good TCS that HELPS prevent some of that.. not always successful but better than the viper.
Heh, I'm NJ and my S is SC'd. I'd show it to you, I just don't do clutch drops... I like my clutch in its current non-glazed/burnt condition and my diff pumpkin to remain in its current location... At least until next year when I do 4.57's and Act clutch
Oh, and I'm running on all season tire until Nov. when I'll put on snow tires... So cornering is not great right now
until spring
