Here is a dumb question but what does it mean to be given the thumbs up? and when should I give a thumbs up?

What does it means? Are there any other signals I should know? (I know what it means when people flip me the bird... I think)

I am a new S2000 owner and has been having some fun but do not what to seem rude out there!
