Default Why "rev" on me?

Okay folks...first off, let me ask that you appreciate that I'm not a "street racer." And while I don't post that derogatorily, I make point of it to say that, similar to posting in the Electronics forum when a person wants knowledge about wiring stuff (and the person don't know crunk about electronics ), similarly I'm posting here for information because I'm not part of the street racing scene.

So...here's the issue. My ride is fine. I'm driving down the road, minding my own business...and all the sudden "WaAAAHHHHHHHHH....WwwwwaaaHHHHH!" (some asshole in a [name any model car you want]...revs on me). Okay...sometimes...sometimes...(and *this* is what especially puzzles me) it happens when a car is travelling in the opposing direction . I mean, WTF is the point of reving on me...if you're travelling away from me?

The question then presents itself: Is a "rev" issued as a challenge? Or does a person rev to say "nice car" [compliment]?. I'm confused. Anyone care to enlighten me?

- Dave

I guess it would mean one of the following:

1.) Lets run em.

or

2.) Oh look at me im a rice boy, hear my car go vroom...

Who knows what goes through the mind of some people. I've noticed I get it mostly from pickups (import or domestic...doesn't seem to matter), not your turbo diesels either which may or may not have some crazy work done to them and actually have a chance, just your run of the mill Chevy 1500 series, Toyota Tundra and similar trucks which have no shot in hell. Also, the yellow S seems to really irk 3rd gen Camaro owners for some reason, usually in a shitty state of tune as well.
I've not noticed this from the typical ricer crowd (Civics, Cavaliers, Eclipses), they tend to gravitate toward the even less welcome "tailgate the shit out of me" move. Usually a quick false brake check maneuver solves this though.

I like the downshift to 3rd and give it no gas while going 90 move. The sudden ass of the S in their grill with no warning of brake lights usually freaks them out.

I blame this particular behavior on "nighttime" videogames such as PS2's Midnight Club where "challenges" are accomplished by riding the ass of another driver, flippin' highbeams, and then tearin' up the [virtual] streets.

Haha, I'm too afraid they may actually hit me to do that though. Sure it would be their fault, but I'd still have a dent in my S.

It's a dominance thing, just like 2 male animals seeing each other on the wild, they think the other might be threat so they show dominance to try and scare the other guy. My brother thinks my theory is crazy but really think about it, it kinda makes sense. Animals use their horns, teeth or claws, we use cars, houses and sometime fists. Sure this don't apply to 100% of people it's true most of the time.

My house is bigger than yours.

My car is faster than yours.

I can knock you out with one punch.

It all goes down to the animal thing, males are all pretty much made to compete, compete for a mate is the main goal so in come the big houses, nice cars and suits, kinda shows you can provide a female and her offspring with the goods and shows you are sucessful, like a female animal in the wild, who wants the runt of the pack? All females wants the leader to ensure thier offspring and big and strong. So next time this happens, it's the animal thing.
No doubt some people reading this think I'm talking BS and other half think I'm crazy ha ha!

A quick yank of the E-brake will accomplish the same thing (keep your finger on the button!)...without placing undue stress on your diff & tranny. A much older me now admits I pulled this manuver as a college student with my CRX when an unmarked highway trooper was tailgating me after I'd slowed down from an unnecessarily high rate of speed to look in my mirror and notice that the only thing I could see was the trooper's face talking into his CB mike
