Default '03 for Invoice

I've picked between now and the end of the year to get my S2000. I've been to several dealerships and talked to quite a few sales representatives on the phone. My goal is to get an '03 for invoice. Most of them tell me that I'm crazy, but when I explain that it's the 4th year of production, the new BMW Z4 and Nissan 350Z convertible are on the way and the weather is going to be cold for a while, they atleast understand I have some logic to what I'm thinking. I keep telling them that I've waited four years and considering the new competition and 4th year of production, the car will eventually sell at invoice so whoever does that first will earn my business. I went to one dealer that has two '02's and three '03's available. I told them that I wanted an '03 at invoice. They brought me out an offer for an '03 at some amount above sticker or an '02 at invoice. It seems that they really want to get rid of the '02 so they were jacking the price of the '03 to push me in to it. Another dealer that I went to has two '03's and one '02. The sales guy I talked to told me that the '02 has a new 100k mile warranty engine in it because another sales guy was messing around with it and blew the engine. Anyway, I told them I want an '03 at invoice and immediately got to talk to the owner of the dealership. He was very nice and respectful and seem to understand that I have good knowledge of the S2000 market. He said that I may or may not be able to find one for invoice, but considering he will likely have to keep them for three months before they sell, he will sell me the light silver '03 for $836 over invoice or the red '03 for $1236 over invoice. I want to hold out longer if I can get a better deal, but am I being realistic? I'm also debating between the lt. silver and the red. From all the calls that I've made, it seems that there is a much higher population of silvers than reds in my area. As a matter of fact, this red one is the only one that I've seen. It has 14.6 miles on it. Do you think someone could have messed it up by V-Teching it before the proper break-in?

I think you're being realistic. In Toronto, there is a guy getting one for C$42K which is like getting it in the US for 28.2K, below so-called "invoice" I believe. I talked to my dealer who said he would match or beat any price given in the area. I'm just waiting for the other guy (Benfica S200) to get his delivery receipt so I can show my proof. It was for an 03 by the way.

By the way, holdback on honda's is 3%, or another $1,000 on the S2000.

Interestingly, the dealer that I got the $836 and $1236 quotes from calculated things the way I do. He said that his profit on the $836 over invoice car (lt. silver) would be $1814 ($836 over invoice + $978 holdback). He said that it's not enough on an '03 S2000 and let me walk. Half of the other sales guys that I've talked to act personally attacked when I tell them I will buy it at invoice. They complain that they would not be making any money, is that fair, I've got to pay my house payment, etc. I didn't hear any of this when they were selling for thousands over sticker. When I point out to them that holdback is $978, they try to dismiss it like it doesn't count. Anyway, should I hold out for a better price or is that likely the best I can do on an '03?
