Default '04 shift speeds.

Just curious if others have seen that shifting fast as 8k causes some noise? I'm not trying to beat on my car, but I finally had a chance to really give her some stick and found that shifting as fast as I could at 8k causes a funky noise. It doesn't quite sound like grinding, but it doesn't sound good. Did the previous model s2k's make this noise as well?

Just curious of what others hear. I know it's not anything to do with my clutch timing, I left the clutch pedal down the whole time while I went from first to second. Same noise.

hmmm can you describe more what it sounds like? high/low pitch, duration of sound, source of sound (from your post i'd imagine gearbox? transmission?), any vibrations you feel?? I'd imagine it must be pretty loud if you can hear it over the engine revs...

It's defintely from the transmission. I guess it's like a crunch. It just surprises me that it would make such a sound.

Only noise I ever heard was the first few times I redlined it I heard myself cursing because the computer turned off the fun.

I've not experienced a problem like you've described. I'd have it looked it.

Well how hard were you shifting? I can redline the car and still shift. It's just if I shift the car very quickly. The thing that has me worried is that I know it has nothing to do with my clutch timing.

I get no noise from flogging my '04, and any gearbox with such short throws should be designed to take a quick shift...

I have actually gotten pretty proficient at shifting right at the rev limiter and can do it fast enough between 1st and 2nd to make the wheels chirp. There is no noise, grinding, vibration of any sort so I would suggest you have it looked at.

There is a whole corn field of posts dealing with gear crunch/clash whatever.

Happens to me at any RPM I shift at, especially 1-2 and 2-3 upshifts.

I've followed threads on here from "woodwork" and "xviper" dealing with gear "crunch" these guys know this car like they built it (in woodwork's case maybe he has). I don't try to shift fast- nice smooth 'pull' towards the correct gate, let the syncros do their job etc.- still does it.

I drive like a granny-just cruising around, no double up-shifts (4-6 for example), power shifts, partial clutch engagements or anything like that.

So far, after only about 300 miles the crunch happens about 60% of the time. Shows no signs of going away, and yes, it does it when the tranny is hot or cold.

Recently I've tried slowing my shifts even more, but the revs drop too much and the clutch engagement makes for a jerky ride so this is not a solution either. I have tried a Voodoo shift knob but it still does it. Next I'm going to try changing the tranny oil. Maybe something other than Honda MTL.

I've read others who say it gets better with miles- I can only hope because right now it is far from a smooth shifting gear box- sorry Honda-this is not the way it's suppose to be. The addition of carbon coated syncros have not cured this problem-at least in my case.

It's getting to the point where I'm considering a warranty visit-but I dread that based on some of the stories I've read.

.....hmmmm....I have never had any 'crunch' at any of my gears, unless I'm doing something dumb(it's happened once or twice). I have had notchiness between 1-2 when the tranny is cold but that's about it. I've never had any issues with any other gear changes. My car has 10K on it and I redline shift a couple times a day.

My opinion for those of you that are having consistant problems with the tranny. Have someone local you trust drive your car. If they notice the same problem then it is likely a problem with the vehicle. You can also take it into a dealer and report the problem and see if they can replicate it.

We've had a local guy reporting problems with grinding/problematic transmission. He had a couple of local drivers drive his car and took it to a dealer and reported the problem. Everyone said that there was no problem with the transmission. He admits it's probably the way he drives(he learned stick on the S). If other drivers/the dealer can't replicate the problem, then there's a good chance it's something the driver is doing wrong with his shifting.
