Default 1-2 Grind on late model 2001

Hey guys.

My car has got less than 7600 miles on it, and this past week, I've been getting the 1-2 grind a lot. It's never happened on a 3-2 shift. Sometimes it will even do it when I have the clutch pressed in all the way and shift at around 4500 RPM. One time, 4th gear grinded the same way when I had the clutch pressed in all the way. And also, at WOT above 8,000 rpm, I get this loud ringing sound, is that normal? I believe it's coming from the tranny. And when I let off the clutch while in gear, the car makes an annoying buzzing sound between 3-4k RPM. My car is a MY 2001 #6902. I know for a fact that when I take the car into the dealership, I won't be able to reproduce the grind, only because the cars always seem to get cured while at the dealer.

And do you think the dealer will question how I know about the ringing sound above 8--9k RPM? I know taking the car to 9k RPM does not void the warranty (or is it?), but will I get some bullshit from them? What should I say?

Thanks in advance.

It's really funny because I was going to post about the same thing about 2 minutes before I saw your post. I also have a late model 2001, and my car grinds 1-2 only. The first few times I thought it was driver error - clutch not all the way in or such. Today it happened 3 times, and all 3 times I paused as soon as I heard the grind and examined my position. The clutch was ALL THE WAY DOWN each and every time. I tried jiggling my foot to see if the sole was touching something else and keeping the pedal from being fully depressed, but it didn't move an inch. My hand was gripping the shifter properly, and it slid into the gate without touching the edges. I noticed this problem happening only in the mid-RPM ranges, primarily from 4k to right about when it's ready to go into VTEC.

I thought this issue was supposed to be solved for the 2001s? What gives?

The ringing/rattle is a normal condition - which I think the '02 fixes - here we go again My '00 sounded a lot louder than the '01 but it still does exist in the '01.

As for the grind.... I'm not touching that one....

Like yf69, my grind didn't start for a couple of months, but now I can go a week without a peep, and then grind it 3 times in one day.

How have people complained about this to the dealerships? Since it happens so arbitrarily, I don't think it can be demonstrated. I also doubt any service tech. will not try to blame the driver. Do we need to have this video taped? Or a certified technician in the car to testify on your behalf?

Honda needs to step up and provide a real fix for the '00-'01 models that are having this 1-2 grind problem. If in fact the '02s do have an improved transmission that will not grind, then they need to do this work through warranty for the previous models.

I rarely grind. It only occurs when I find myself a little sloppy in shifting and when the car is warmed up and I'm revving it up to redline.

I have a late model '01 as well. But to address your other concerns, I also get the buzz when decelerating while off the gas in 3rd gear - sometimes happens in 4th, but more often in 3rd. Doesn't bother me cuz the car's working fine.

As for the ringing sound when going into VTEC to redline, that is normal.

It's been cold up here in New Englad guys. I'm sure you've noticed, but this tranny doesn't like the cold weather. I remembered than this morning when I got on it (after 15 minutes of driving) and got the 1-2 grind. You can really "feel the gears working" when it's cold, if you know what I mean. It gets real notchy, shifts often have metallic sounds to them (not necessarily grinding). I always let the car heat up, go through all of the gears before I head out, and see which ones feel stiff. It almost seems like each gear has to warm up by itself. The more you drive, the better the shifting becomes.

I agree completely with what everyone said, i too have a late model stook and i experience the 1-2 grind, and the deceleration buzzing sound in mainly third. i have yet to take my car in, but there is definetly a problem.
