I'm "notchy" in really cold weather from 1-3. When warm, it all goes away except the 1-2 I talked about above.

BTW, the 1-2 problem is ONLY at high (above 6k) revs.

Double clutching on 1-2 shift (or any UP shift for that matter) is unnecessary, You doublr clutch on a DOWN shift not an upshift. The whole idea is to match the tranny input shaft revs to the output shaft revs so the synchros don't have to do any work. When you take your foot off the accelerator, guess what, the revs drop! When they have dropped the proper amount the gear lever will just slip into the higher gear with virtually no effort.

So just pause in neutral while the revs drop. That's all you need to do. Double clutching (letting clutch in and out) accomplishes nothing except possibly to force you to pause.

Now downshifting is another story. Here you double clutch to ACCELERATE the input shaft revs as it can't accelerate by itself.

BTW, the reason big trucks double clutch on upshifts is because they have massive trannys with big heavy input shafts with a lot of inertia. When you declutch, the input shaft takes a long time to decelerate. The engine actually slows faster than the inout shaft so double clutching (which momentarily connects the engine to the input shaft) slows it down faster.

I'm with you Tex. No problems with the 1-2 shift, but my 2-3 shift has this strange notch feeling to it. Happens at any speed and any temp as well.

Everytime I tell the dealer to check it out, they just dismiss me with the same "it's normal" crap.

Should we DC/Pause even if we have no problems with notchy shifting?

LOL - we used to double-clutch when we had cars with no syncros in them. Yes, a very good idea. I thought my 2002 S' was unique with this 1-2 problem. Thanks for putting a new owner's mind at ease.

I agree the 3rd gear "catch" seems to happen mainly when shifting quick, but even so....I shift quick through all my gears and the notchiness only ever happens in the 3rd gear. So there's something special going on with the 3rd gate. (and it never happens on 4-3 downshift....only 2-3 upshift).

It always feels like the shifter hesitates to move into 2nd in the beginning, but it seems like if I take first gear to about 4500 rpm's before I shift and it works fine
