It's been one month since I got my 2002 S2K and I've got rust. I found it in the engine compartment, it is a very small amount, but when it starts it doesn't quit. I'm going to take it in to the dealership since it's still under warranty, but it's pretty disappointing to find that in a brand new car. I was wondering if anyone else has had any rust problems. Also I looked under the car and noticed there was no undercoating, I was wondering what honda uses to protect it (I'm paranoid now).

sorry no pics. It is on the drivers side just before the strut tower (before meaning closer to the driver). Some spots are on a weld and others on the flat part of the compartment. I'm worried about the flat part, I have a 240Z and its compartment is flat like the S2K and it's common for it to rust.

Wow... def. take some pics if you can. In total defense of Honda, I'm VERY surprised to hear this. Especially with you being in a "not prone to salt" state. Best of luck with the dealer, let us know how it turns out!

Unfortuantely cars are not made of stainless steel and so you will get some rust. "Electra" has never seen rain, snow, or nary a cloud. But alas I do have to give her a sponge bath now and again. The most amazing thing about the S2000 to me is how FAST the rotors rust when you wash the car. You can literally sit with a beer and watch it form as the disc drys. Rust is a relative term.............

That was one thing I liked about my A4, all the sheet metal was galvanized. Not going to rust unless it gets scratched through. That is unless your area is prone to HCL clouds.

Took it to the dealership today and they cleaned it up and used some touch up paint. I'm happy, thats how I wanted to handle it too (got a free bottle of touch up paint out of it). Sorry no pics but the spots must have been about 1/16th of an inch in diameter and about 7 spots. Just surface rust but thats how all rust starts.

Does anyone know if the underside of our car is protected by anything else except paint?

Mine is undercoated with that tar-like substance. BTW, are you close enough to the ocean to get salt spray?
