Default 10 Tips for not Grinding 2nd.

For all those that have the occasional low rev 2nd gear grind.

1) Make sure the clutch is to the floor.
2) Don't shift over train tracks.
3) Don't shift over road bumps.
4) Make sure the have enough leftward pressure.
5) Rev it a bit higher to ~ 4000.
6) Don't go too slow in 1st on a downhill grade and shift to 2nd with low revs.
7) Find that resistance point where you hesitate for a split second then put it into 2nd.
8) Once a week, shift from 1st to 2nd in vtec land 6000 - 9000rpms.
9) Change the MTF every 2nd oil change.
10) pay attention.

This post should be kept up here so everyone can find it, because there are so many people grinding because they aren't shifting properly.

I don't think 2,3,4,5,6,and 8 make any difference. The primary reason these things grind is transmission tolerances. It is stupid to have to baby the transmission in a performance car, but I do have to make slower than optimum shifts to second and change the fluid occasionally to minimize the grind.

Some owners wear the MTF faster than others and every 10 000kms is a good interval.

With the S having such a stiff suspension, going over bumps where your foot gets jostled can definately produce grinds. Have you ever gone over really rough road in 1st and the car starts to buck? Same idea, going over train tracks or bumps can lift your clutch foot by a fraction and that is enough to grind.

It is funny though, when I shift > 6000rpm it is butter smooth from 1st to 2nd, never ground.

What is the big deal with grinding? I ONLY grind when I let out my clutch earlier than supposed to. Very rarely do I do this.

Some people have said like it's the car's fault.

I believe that most of the trannys are near perfect from the factory. There are just a few (mine being one of them), that just aren't up to snuff. I've had quite a few grinds, and most of them may have been driver-induced, but I can swear under oath that some of them were not my fault.

I heard overfilling the trans by half a quart does away with the grind too. So put in 2 quarts instead of 1.5.
