LOL!!!

I'm sorry, I consider this an important matter, but that previous statement DOES crack me up...especially if it's said in a Spinal Tap sort of way..."but, but...but it goes to eleven!"

I've broken a few limits here and there (though NOTHING like 161!), and I wish we could all feel comfortable driving the speed limit, using our turn signals, etc. BUT, we all think OUR limits are the most reasonable...the slower guys are assholes and the faster guys are maniacs.

I would hate to be in the middle of an accident because of some self-proclaimed lunatic like Scot, but at least we know it goes to 11...er, 161

Some say even 100mph is CRAZY and EXTREMLY RISKY.
I pose this sceenario / question:
Every day for the last several years you drive this highway. The speed limit is 55mph. You see someone going 75mph, and say to yourself, "what a thoughtless, inconsiderate, unsafe jerk that guy is!!!!!".
New legislation is passed, a DOT truck rolls down this same highway, and the next morning on your way to work, all the speed limit signs have been changed to 75mph. You see this same guy blow by you at 75mph, (as you are not yet accustomed to the new higher limit). What do you think of that "jerk" today? Is he now a safe, law abiding citizen? Is he not putting anyone @ risk any longer? Kinda makes me wonder!

Question 2:
What is more dangerous?
1) A law abiding citizen in his mint condition '86 Ford Escort (w/o airbags, w/o ABS, 155/80/13 Bias Ply Tires, soft shocks, vague steering, tiny drum brakes) who is travelling the posted limit of 70MPH.

OR

2) A guy driving his 2000 S2000 on the same road @ 100MPH?

I NEVER SAID I WAS A LUNATIC!!!

I said I wasn't very smart. That was some other jerky calling me a lunatic.

I wish there was a big 7 mile oval/banked track for everyone to drive their cars at top speed... with enough
room, i could see the car hitting close to 170mph (indicated...no idea what actual is).

I also wish someday that someone would scream past me at 150mph just to see what it looks/sounds like.

Scot

Macgyver - there is some kids movie where Rodulph wins and the bad guy (arrow) is ..."but....he has a red nose".. kind of spinal tapish, but more my mentality..duh..hehehe.

Good point.

Can we TRUELY enjoy this racing machine by driving within the speed limit?
To me, it's a non-sense to see that some hypocrites pretend to enjoy the car by not driving fast. To those people, I suggest them to buy aMiata or a CLK because the stook with its firm suspension, stiff chassis: laser precision handling, no clock, crappy radio, engine noise...is really not "enjoyable"

Frank,

I suppose the question of who is more dangerous all depends on the situation, but Q1 and Q2 are kind of tied together...

Once the new speed limit has been posted the person driving much slower is creating the hazard.

In the second case, the stook might be the bigger problem if he's doing 100 in and out of traffic while everyone else is doing 70...they may not see him in time if he's moving too fast (say they want to change lanes, and he just pulled into where they were headed, but at 100). On the other hand, if the mint condition Escort is traveling the speed limit, and everyone ELSE is doing 100, then HE's the bigger danger...even if everyone else is breaking the law.

So, our moral is: Just because you break the law doesn't necessarily mean you are the greater danger, and just because you follow the law doesn't mean you're NOT the greater danger.

Much of the danger in this scenario depends on the ability of the car to handle this kind of speed and the abilities of the driver. I don't know Scot so I can't say whether he's capable of handling the car at these speeds but as he said to Greg he's still on his first StooK . That said, I've seen a lot of SUV's that I would say were a hell of a lot more dangerous at slower speeds than Scot probably is at 161. Heck, my sister in law at 25 MPH is more dangerous than ANYONE at 161. And Scot, you gotta at least be a little loonie to go that fast!!

Not knowing where the Wade bridge is, my comment might be way off, but Scott.....where the hell is there a section of I-81 smooth enough to do 161?

81 in PA has to be the worst 120 miles of road in the entire country!
