2.0L vs 2.2L
As I understand it in 2004 they increased the displacement of the engine from 2.0L to 2.2L and lowered the redline from 9,000 rpm (I'm not sure to what). If this is incorrect please correct me.
Can anyone give me the pros and cons of the new engine? I owned an S2000 briefly before (the 2.0L 9,000 rpm redline model, a 2001) and absolutely loved it. The 9,000 rpm redline made the car. I suspect they made this move to make the car less noisy, less vibration, more mannerly on the street, etc. I don't care about any of that. I loved the car loud and raw. What year should I get?
Also what's better for modifying and after market parts? Turbo's, Superchargers, nitrous and others have crossed my mind more than once...

I have the 2.0 displacement engine, and I think I would rather have the 2.2. It has dyno'd higher hp #s stock, and of course has more torque. It IS faster, lowering the redline and adding torque did make it faster.
From what I have seen (just from here looking at people's posted dynos) the 2.2 responds better to bolt-ons.
I don't know exactly how much faster the 2.2s are, so I don't know if its that BIG of a deal.
If we ever find out that we can run pre-04 ECUs in the 2.2 and spin it to 9krpms, I will do an engine swap ASAP hehe.

In short the 2.0 Liter S2000 is gone and won't come back. It is a recognized "Classic". Normally this may take 20-25 years to achieve classic car status. The F20C was the highest normally aspirated engine ever built and still is. The early cars were hand made side by side with the Formula I race cars in Tochigi. The new cars are better and faster. So the choice is simple...mass produced or hand built classic car? How long do you intend to own your car

Is the 04 and higher really not handbuilt anymore? I would imagine since the US is the only one that gets the 2.2 it would even be more rare, since there are less built overall in the world.
I test drove the 03 and was about to buy it. I backed out of it last second. Once I drove the 04 with the extra umph coming in at 3k rpms I bought/leased it the same day. I wish I had the best of both worlds...higher displacement and higher redline but I guess you can't have your cake and eat it too.

Its all what your into. When I went S2k shopping again I went for the 2.0. The little extra torque wasn't that important to me.
Personally I'm just wondering how long it will take Xviper to move this thread to s2000 talk... seeing as this thread is a how to, not a what is better discussion group.

I test drove a '05. The 2.2 felt like it had a little more torque down low, but i couldn't feel or hear the Vtec transition. To me the '04 to '05, Honda made the S2k a little more civilize to drive. The cabin has a little more room. It was little easier to get in & out. Anyway I like my '03 2.0L better!! I could feel and hear the Vtec transition. And to me 9K red line is something special!
