Default 2000 vs. 2002

Hi,

I am getting to get S2000 and deciding if should I go with "like new" 2000 with 10k miles on it for 29k or brand new one where I cannot get lower then 34k (damned Bay Area dealers). What do you think? Are these improvements worth 5K? I doubt that the engine is even broken in after 10k.

You can find s2000s anywhere in the Bay Area now for MSRP. It doesn't matter what they quote you on the outside. Just go in, sit down, be serious about it and say you want MSRP. You'll get it. Many people who have 00 or 01's say they would want to trade in for a 02. Many peoples concern is the glass window. Its really your call but the main point is the glass window, other minor details include the extra 30 watt tweeters etc.

Don't forget the smoother transmission, leather like covering on center console, silver trims here and there and also knowing that no one has abused your vehicle prior

There's probably a good chance the previous owner didn't treat it right. You should post a poll for those who trade their ride, whether they would let a good friend buy their car

I drove the car and have no doubt it is ok. The guy was just making the space in his garage for new big beamer. And I want to sell it after a year anyway since my real target is either 2003 Viper (which looks btw like S2000's bigger brother:-) or new bimmer 6r. So I figured maybe I loose less with used one.

First of all, don't let dealers scare you with mark-up; they do that because some people think they have to accept what they're given in life.

I decided that I'd only get an S2000 if I could get MSRP, and when I called dealers, my first question was, "Do you sell S2000s at MSRP?" If not, I said thanks, and moved on. Some of them laughed when I told them I was only interested if I got MSRP, but I found exactly what I wanted and bought it for exactly MSRP.

I did this with Stevens Creek Honda, and they were saying there was a mark-up, then I called back a few hours later to ask "are you *sure*?", since they had exactly what I wanted. I decided a better tactic is to go higher up initially, so I asked to speak with the sales manager, but ended up talking to the general manager, because the former wasn't available.

I told him I'd come down there the next day and buy it if he'd do MSRP, and he said yes. The funny thing is, it turns out that the salesman had left me vmail in the meantime (I'd given my mobile # and don't have service in my office) saying they'd do MSRP and asking me to please call back. I hadn't yet gotten that message when I called back, and chuckled to myself after listening to his almost pleading tone.

Obviously, I can't speak for the dealership nor the general manager, but he was very easy to deal with, so I recommend you give him a call; his name is Mike Patel.

Good luck, and don't pay more than MSRP!

2000 for $29K is too high. It doesnt matter how many miles the car has, it is 2 yrs old. I think the max you should pay for a 2000 is $26,000.

Besides, rear glass window really makes a difference. Go for the '02! If you can afford a brand new 2003 Viper, $5000 extra is nothing.
