Default 2002 S2000, electric fan?

After you start your car, you hear this really cool fan sound for a few seconds after starting this. What is this? It just sounds really high tech.

Secondary air injection pump. It pumps fresh air into the exhaust headers in order to complete the burn of any unburnt fuel that made it through the cold engine. (MY06 and newer cars do not have this system, btw.)

Awesome. It just sounds expensive, not sure of the word to describe it. So it only comes on after you start your car, then that's it? Can't remember if I've ever heard it come on while idling.

Where it is located in the engine? Any pics?

Near the front left fender.
The intake tube for it connects to the regular air intake in front of the throttle body, after the air filter.

It's a $669 part if you want a new one.

Wow $669. Can you see it with the hood open?

It's in the drivers side bumper right under the headlight. It's just a high flow fan that lights the catalytic converter off quicker. I think it sounds pretty cool too though. Sounds like a small turbine. You should be able to find pics in the DIY removal thread. It's common to yank it once you install an EMS.

How the hell could someone own this car for 6+ years and never notice the air pump?

I noticed it from day one of owning the car. Just wasn't sure what was making that unique turbine sound.
