2002 vs 2006 Models - Performance Difference?
My 2002 S2000 was totaled in an accident back in September 2011. I purchased it brand new in 2002 an planned on keeping it until the wheels fell off. I purchased a 2006 model in pristine condition last March 2012 from a private owner and have been enjoying it as much as my prior one. The 2006 has about 17,000 miles on it now. Question: I seem to notice that the 2006 does not have the same performance when above 7,000 RPMs when compared to my 2002 model - it appears that the difference in the red line of 9,000 vs 8,000 results in a top end power/performance loss. Am I crazy or is this a fact?
I am a fairly new owner of an 07 myself, with limited time behind the wheel of an ap1 (02), but I can relate what your experiencing with my sport bike experience. I have an r6 (06), which are known to be utterly gutless down low, but scream at the upper revs. The transition of no/limited power to lots of power (relatively) makes the ride feel more powerful and faster than it actually is.
So, basically, the fact that the ap1s were more gutless down low would make them feel more powerful.
FTR Im not sure if they (ap1s) are or aren't more powerful, just wanted to explain something I realized when riding different bikes. Hopefully someone with more insight and relevant knowledge will chime in.

It may be another AP1 versus AP2 thread but I have yet to find one that specifically addressed the performance at high RPM question that the OP asks (though I gave up after skimming the first page of site-restricted Google hits). It's entirely likely that it has been discussed before given the sheer number of AP1 versus AP2 threads. If you have a link to one that does so then post it.
IIRC lap times for the two are equivalent even though there are differences (and tradeoffs). It's entirely possible that the AP1 has better high RPM performance given the AP2's improved torque but I'm just speculating. Preference certainly varies given the difference between the two.
Could be option C which is that your butt dyno is off which isn't uncommon given the dubious reliability of butt dynos.

Judging by the information in the link above, it would seem that max power is hit on an 06 at 7800 rpms vice the max power hit at 8300 rpm on an 02. Also keep in mind the 06 has DBW which is a different feel than the 02 has with the mechanical linkage. Unless there is an issue with your motor, what you are feeling are just the different characteristics between the two engines and electronics.

I was at a track event with my last s2k months ago and a buddy of mine had a AP1 with 4.77s and my AP2 was totally stock. On the one long straight I was consistently hitting slightly higher speeds than him. Like others have said both can be made equally as fast. In fact there are probably more fast AP1 track cars out there than AP2.
