If there was an S2000 @ 12000rpm redline, I would sell my house to buy 50 of them.
VERY generally: HP= engine speed,
torque=engine power
(I repeat: VERY GENERALY)
So if we had a lightweight car (S2000) with 290hp @12000rpm (because the more rpms, the more hp you gain), in combination with a SHORT gear ratio...that would be amazing! The engine sound would be F1 style, but we would have to change oil, pistons, and valver, every month! So we can lower the redline, and increase torque (power) so the engine would be slower, but more powerfull. Then we have to change the gear ratio (longer), cause now the engine would be able to "turn" a smaller gear. Just like the mountain bike.
Finally I wanted to say that torque is not THAT necessary to a light car, but a BMW really needs some torque!
