Default 2004 S, fake front vents?

Anyone know if the integrated vents in the front bumper real? From the pictures I've seen it looks like they are fake.

If they do have a function, what is the purpose of them?

i'm guessing they serve the same purpose as those fake ones for the 00-03...mainly, it makes the bumper less plain...

Hmm I am not sure about this - I have closely zoomed up to every single photo available, and although there looks to be a plastic piece in the vent - it appears to be at an angle with a gap, that is, directing air into the brake ducts -

If anyone has a pic to the contrary - pls post -

Well, just a guess, but if they made them functional it would most likely appear in the technical specs. It doesn't.

They mention a 5% increase in intake airflow but I don't think that's from the faux vents. They changed the front grill opening to achieve this.

I read about the 5% increase for the intake. I've seen a pic of the engine bay and the air box design looks to be the same. However, the front part of the air box, where the horn would be is not shown on the pic I've seen. I'm guessing that's where the upgraded design is that contributes to the airflow increase?

This is just a guess, but they may have widened the horn piece a bit to allow for more air being directed better through the front grill. That would be a fairly cheap modification from a production standpoint since the horn is a seperate piece form the box. The rest of the airbox looks the same.

A close up shows they are faked in the same manner as the old ones.

Might be easier to route brake ducts from those areas than the previous years.

I would be interested to hear why the engineers feel the "Mustang" approach to vents should apply to the S2000. It would be quite easy from a manufacturing standpoint, to open up those vents during the build process and yet while massaging the engine (at who knows what expense) and suspension, they somehow felt making those vents usable to be unneccessary. I would dearly love to hear 'em comment on why because I certainly don't agree.
