Default 2005 S2000, Good buy?

Hey all,

Posting because I'm interested in a 2005 Silverstone S2000 with 71k miles. Want to know what you all think. I had a PPI done, and these were the main issues:
  • Radiator neck is seeping (will need rad replaced)
  • Clutch pedal travel is sticky, but clutch holds well. Seems like a bad TOB or shaft..
  • Vibration on accel (1 diff mount is cracked, could be the cause. or could be axles on their way out
  • Trashed driver side door card/door sheetmetal (from contacting the seat belt, it seems)
Everything else seems to be in good/average condition for the age of the car. Compression is 200+ cold across all cylinders.
Guy is asking around 19k for it. Is this a reasonable price for a car in this condition? It'll take some work (most of which I can do at home) to get back to "perfect."

Thanks!!

I think it's too much. But if you live in Cali it might be reasonable.

19k.. cheap ass floor mats(non oem), no care in the world about the seat belt whacking the door, Beat soft top. Rear bumper has been repainted and doesn't match. Plus with everything else you mentioned...

lol, If he doesn't care about the seatbelt what else does he not care about?

More like 11-13k.

also what gives with the floppy ass non oem antenna lol

Yeah there are a number of issues. I don't think the rear bumper has been painted, the original vin tags are present there..
Car has a good amount of service records, and the powertrain seems in really good condition.

19k is too much, but I bet he'd block me if i offered 11-13k hahah

Man, things really have gotten bad when this is an example of what you're finding when somebody is asking $19K. First off, clean title? Let's assume so. I would want to see what the actual front bumper cover and what the front of the hood looks like (get the painters tape off of there) along with what the rest of the driver's door looks like (in addition to the damage shown, it's also missing some hardware above the VIN sticker). I'd also want to see what the driver's seat looks like (get the towel off of there) and the carpets too (get those big rugs out of there). Pricing is going to depend to some degree on where you are located. If the car is still located in California, assuming a clean title, going by what's shown here you have to assume the worst for everything else not shown or seen in a bad light, in which case let's say anywhere from $13K - $15K. Make the seller show you much more of the car (including the engine bay for sure) and have them present the car in an overall better light if they want to get more out you in exchange for the car. Even then this isn't a $19K car.

Yep, prices are through the roof for these damn cars. I should clarify some things. A very reputable shop in my area did a few hour PPI on this car before I took these photos. There's not much wrong with the exterior body (painters tape is on because the seller drove 150 miles to bring the car to the shop, and didn't want rock chips). The drivers door is missing one screw, like you mentioned. The seats are in excellent condition (towel is there to avoid jeans ripping into the leather). Floor is in great condition too (but yes those rugs are very ugly haha)

The car is indeed based in California, and does have a clean title with zero accident history. It drove pretty well, minus the clutch sticking, which is a common problem on these cars when parts get worn. Fixing that won't be cheap though..

Never seen a door like that before. Impressive.

Just because the VIN is present doesn’t mean it hasn’t been painted. Not saying it has though. Paint meter would help.

It’s not a desirable color. I dunno, prices have gotten out of hand on these. I don’t see the value, but if you do, give the fellar your benjamins.

For $19,000, I would think that you could get a car without these problems. Have you looked at any AP1's? They were a little less expensive than AP2's when I bought my car several years ago. I'd keep looking. (And for what it's worth, if you're a little flexible on the kind of car you're buying(!), there's a REALLY nice Acura RSX Type-S on Bringatrailer.com right now. Unmolested ones are really hard to find, and this one is a good one. I'd buy it if I had room in my garage!). Like I said, FWIW!

Lol dang this guy either knows he's reaching into the stars asking for $19K...or hes oblivious to any issues on a car as long as it runs.

With the market how it is at this very second...maybe offer him $15K-16K. Its going to take you between $1K to 3K to fix all the issues (assuming you're paying for labor).

For those wondering, cars in CA cost a lot of money. Take (your state here) pricing and factor in a $3-5K "because California" adder.

Also...why does the door panel appear to be painted black under the door card? Maybe its just the way the light is hitting that beauty, eh?

Why move the seat belt when you can slam the door on it and then sell the car for $19K?

When I drove my S2000 1500 miles from New England to Florida (in October east coast I-95 weather) many years ago, I installed a cheap vinyl nose bra to protect the paint. I would be very suspicious about someone who covers the bumper/hood with painter's tape to drive 150 miles in sunny CA.....just sayin.
