2009 S2000 News
I must say that if they indeed use the sequential manual gearbox from Volkswagen, it will be a fun machine (if they had kept the original engine). I have a 2007 GTI and really love this gearbox. It's faster than a manual tranny and gets better mileage. I don't miss the clutch at all because the shifts are so fast and you can shift whenever you want (even up to redline and slightly past). As I really love my MY'08 I couldnt' help but think how much fun it would be with the Volks shift system. But if they really replace the motor, that would be sad. I'd rather see them add a turbo.
hm interesting. well s2k sales are down compared to all years and the market has changed. not to mention this car is one of the rawest u can buy on the market...and well, only a select few ppl will choose to buy it. it makes sense honda wants to go more mainstream.
granted, there IS an S2K "replacement" coming - it will not be called S2000 and will be different in all respects. this article is right in some respects, but there is also a looot of speculation/guesses from what i read as to what will be included and to its setup/design....and only Honda Japan knows what's to come

I think the new improvements are great. If they are going to put a K20 in there then the motor isn't as weak as you might think. Assuming that they develop a KPRO for the K-series going in to the new s2k, that motor has crazy potential and just with K-PRO alone you will notice a huge hp gain if you aren't into heavy modding.
And for the people who like to do serious modding, the K-series in my opinion is the best I4 out there. There are K24/K20 setups pushing 350whp, so there is some serious potential for an NA monster that we have all wanted with this car from day 1. Also the 100 lbs the car is shedding is good news.
The only thing I wouldn't be for in the new S2K is the Volkswagon 6-speed sequential, I hope they keep it a manual 6-speed transmission just because I have more fun with that, even though the sequential transmissions out now are more efficient.
I made this post with speculation of the K-series they put in there to have a good after market following for tuning and parts, so I'm excited to see what actually comes out, and as long as it doesn't look horribly ugly I plan on getting my hands on one eventually.

Speaking from an engineering perspective (I'm by no means an expert - putting on my flame suit!) doesn't the K20 engine rotate the wrong way since it is used only in front wheel drive applications? If it was placed in a rear wheel drive platform, wouldn't you then have 1 forward gear, and 6 reverse gears?
Is it as simple as swapping out the tranny, or would the entire engine have to be redesigned for a rear wheel setup? How much effort would this take on Honda's part? Would this be something that could be achieved before 2009 (even including the idea of it being a mid-year replacement). I think with no concept so far, it would be difficult to foresee this happening so soon.
Then again, I suppose they could always keep things the way they are and make it a "front wheel drive roadster" a la the Dodge Demon

No crazy_schizo, a lot of people swap K20's into their Lotus Elises. And btw a K20 + Elise (2000lbs) + K-PRO = ~240rwhp =)
While the Elise is a mid-engine car, I'm sure Honda can figure out a way to make the K20 RWD in a front mounted car. Most of it comes down to just mating it with a transmission that will support a RWD drive train.

It doesn't matter anymore. The S2000 doesn't even really exist anymore. Nobody talks about it, nobody worries about it. It's not on anybody's radar.
Every year at the car show, it just sits there. Nobody stops to look at it, it's just ignored now.
Honda killed the image of the S2000 just like they did the NSX. Too many years in the same skin. The car was never improved the way it should have been. All of it's previous competitors now look at the S2000 as a bothersome fly that can easily be brushed off.
Honda has made the Civic better than the S2000. Honda, how can you make your "almost" cheapest car better than your only sports car? That makes no sense. And Honda, if you were going to make a sporty Civic, why half ass it and not let it compete against the Evo X and Sti?
If I had a stock S2000, I'd be afraid to run against basically any sports car that has come out in 2008 in fear of being embarrassed... other than a Miata... in a straight line drag race.
